Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Bovine OPU/ET Technician to join our advanced reproductive services team. This role bridges specialized field operations and laboratory procedures, focusing heavily on Ovum Pick-Up (OPU)-the ultrasound-guided retrieval of oocytes from donor cows-as well as the handling, processing, and transfer of bovine embryos. The successful candidate will work closely with veterinarians and embryologists to maximize reproductive efficiency and genetic progress for our clients.
STgenetics® is a global leader in reproductive technologies, including IVF and embryo production. ST provides high-quality embryos, semen, and livestock to partners around the world and is recognized for its expertise in domestic and international genetic advancement programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES
  • Ovum Pick-Up (OPU) Assistance & Execution: Set up, calibrate, and maintain specialized OPU equipment (transvaginal ultrasound, aspiration pumps, and warming systems). Assist veterinarians with or independently perform transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte aspiration on donor cattle.
  • Oocyte Search & Preparation: Immediately isolate, wash, and grade recovered cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from follicular fluid in a mobile or stationary lab setting. Prepare and package oocytes for transport to the IVF laboratory.
  • Embryo Transfer (ET) & Handling: Assist with or execute non-surgical embryo transfer protocols into recipient cows. Search, evaluate, and grade embryos according to International Embryo Technology Society (IETS) standards.
  • Data Management: Meticulously track donor collection data, oocyte yields, recipient synchronization schedules, and pregnancy rates using reproductive management software.
  • Client Relations & Cattle Handling: Communicate effectively with herd managers and producers regarding donor preparation, synchronization protocols, and collection schedules. Safely restrain and handle livestock during procedures.
  • Additional Duties as Requested: Vaccinations, cattle movement, etc.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Dairy Science, or a related agricultural field. Equivalent hands-on industry experience will be strongly considered.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in bovine reproduction, specifically with OPU, embryo transfer, or artificial insemination (AI).
  • Technical Proficiency: * Strong understanding of transvaginal ultrasound equipment and aspiration mechanics.
    • High level of manual dexterity and stereomicroscope competency for searching/handling microscopic structures.
    • Knowledge of bovine synchronization protocols and reproductive anatomy.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities under field conditions, and the ability to work cohesively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Environment: Ability to work in variable outdoor weather conditions and livestock housing facilities, alongside a clean, sterile mobile or stationary laboratory environment in a team environment.
  • Schedule: Early morning start times and flexibility to accommodate shifting biological timelines or client schedules. Some weekends are also required.
