Actalent is seeking a lab technician to support an industrial paint manufacturing company in Columbus. This role involves coordinating the collection of random samples from production batches and conducting a wide variety of complex testing processes to measure the physical characteristics of products. The position is a long term opportunity and on 2nd shift, from 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM, Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and follow a batch ticket (recipe) with high degree of accuracy for weights and measurements.
  • Perform a wide variety of complex testing processes on production batches to measure product’s physical or chemical characteristics, including viscosity, weight per unit of measure, flow, gloss, color characteristics, and similar tests.
  • Conduct tests on materials from suppliers and batches from production.
  • Perform standard testing procedures, including preparation of materials, with attention to detail and high quality.
  • Follow daily work plans for Lab Work Requests or project plans.
  • Accurately document work in lab notebooks, either physical or electronic.
  • Recognize roadblocks or anomalies and resolve them or communicate concerns with a chemist in a timely manner.
  • Ensure raw materials are available and correctly labeled.
  • Correctly label and mail samples.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Tint batches independently.
  • Calculate resin composites.
  • Maintain quality control records using a web-based computer system.
  • Prepare records for submission.
  • Perform testing on lab equipment such as viscosity, pH, weight per gallon, and percentage of solids.
  • Conduct drawdowns and use ovens.
  • Maintain and perform calibrations on machines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Must not be color blind.
  • Prior quality/wet lab experience OR entry-level graduate with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Science. Would also accept a HS Diploma and industry experience.
  • Prior experience working with paint, pigments, color matching and coatings is helpful.
  • Industrial lab experience doing basic wet chemistry such as viscosity, pH, and percentage of solids is preferred.

Work Environment

The position is based in an industrial lab environment within the plant. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a lab coat and safety glasses will be provided. The facility may contain strong smells of chemicals and paint, so candidates must not be sensitive to such conditions. The lab is relatively large, with at least five people on each shift at all times. The position is for the 2nd shift, from 2:00 PM - 10:30 PM, Monday-Friday. Training will also be conducted during the 2nd shift.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.25 - $25.25/hr.
