Job description

Mail Processing Clerk

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for processing, receiving, and delivering mail, packages, and other materials; performs related duties as required.

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

  • Delivers, collects, and processes mail (U.S., Inter-office, U.P.S., express, etc.);

  • Sorts mail for distribution according to department, division, etc;

  • Weighs, applies postage, sorts, and bands local and out-of-town mail for delivery to U.S. Post Office;

  • Prepares and wraps packages to be mailed or delivered;

  • Checks outgoing mail to ensure that the correct mail bar code is used to allow for proper billing to client agency;

  • Picks up mail from U.S. Post Office;

  • Operates offline peripheral equipment such as forms burster, decollator, folder, and mechanical inserter;

  • Operates electronic mailing equipment such as postage meter, bulk mail machine, or automatic letter opening equipment;

  • Distributes output reports and forms;

  • Picks up or delivers messages, mail, packages, supplies, and other materials;

  • Loads and unloads packages, supplies, equipment, wastewater samples, parts, and other items as appropriate;

  • Reads instruction labels on packages, requisition orders, and sales slips in order to determine the proper description of items and delivery locations;

  • Maintains various records, logs, forms, and other documents as warranted;

  • Operates a motor vehicle to pick up and deliver mail and messages;

  • May perform other clerical duties such as copying, filing, performing routine data entry functions or incidental typing, answering the telephone, and maintaining supplies and forms; assists in taking inventory of supplies needed;
  • May operate some type of equipment or machinery in the performance of job duties when lifting or moving heavy items or equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the twelfth school grade. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma.

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Test/Job Contact Information

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center.

The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 100% covering Oral Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Information Ordering, and Name and Number Comparison.

The exam is expected to be administered in late September 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
