How much do imaging informatics jobs pay per year?
What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Imaging Informatics roles?
Professionals in Imaging Informatics often encounter challenges related to integrating various imaging systems, maintaining data security and patient privacy, and ensuring compatibility across different healthcare technologies. Another frequent challenge is balancing the technical needs of IT with the clinical requirements of radiologists and other healthcare providers. Close collaboration with multiple departments and continuous learning about new imaging software and regulations are essential aspects of the job. Being proactive and adaptable helps Imaging Informatics specialists navigate these hurdles effectively and ensures consistent, high-quality support for medical imaging operations.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Imaging Informatics position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Imaging Informatics, you need a strong background in medical imaging technologies, data management, and healthcare IT, often supported by a degree in health informatics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with PACS, DICOM standards, RIS, and certifications such as CIIP (Certified Imaging Informatics Professional) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and an aptitude for teamwork help professionals excel when bridging clinical and technical teams. These competencies are critical to ensure safe, effective management of imaging data and support clinical care delivery.
What is an Imaging Informatics job?
An Imaging Informatics job focuses on managing and optimizing medical imaging systems, such as Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and Radiology Information Systems (RIS). Professionals in this field ensure efficient storage, retrieval, and sharing of medical images while maintaining data integrity, security, and compliance with healthcare regulations. They collaborate with radiologists, IT teams, and healthcare providers to integrate imaging technologies with electronic health records (EHR) and improve workflow. This role requires a mix of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of medical imaging standards like DICOM and HL7.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join an interdisciplinary collaboration between Dr. Yuan Xue (Department of Biomedical Informatics) and Dr. Andrea Ferreira Zandona (College of Dentistry) at The Ohio State University. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead cutting-edge research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and dental health, with a focus on building multimodal AI models to predict dental caries progression.
The successful candidate will work on developing deep learning and computer vision models using longitudinal dental imaging data-primarily intraoral radiographs-integrated with clinical and behavioral data collected from multiple collaborating institutions. The overarching goal of this research is to enable early and accurate prediction of caries lesion progression to support precision prevention and treatment planning. The postdoc will lead efforts to design multimodal learning architectures (e.g., attention-based fusion, progression-aware temporal modeling), perform rigorous model validation, and help translate research findings into clinically meaningful insights in close collaboration with dental experts.
This is a full-time position based in Columbus, Ohio with an initial appointment of two years and the possibility of extension based on performance and funding. The postdoctoral fellow will be primarily based in Dr. Xue's lab at the Department of Biomedical Informatics but will work closely with Dr. Zandona's team at the College of Dentistry, one of the nation's top programs in cariology research. The position includes competitive salary and benefits through Ohio State, as well as funding for travel to present at leading conferences.
How to Apply
To apply, please submit your application electronically via Workday and send the following materials in a single PDF to Dr. Yuan Xue at yuan.xue@osumc.edu:

Additional Information:Job Requirements:
Required:
- PhD in computer science, biomedical informatics, electrical engineering, or a related field
- Demonstrated expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and image-based modeling.
- A strong publication record in top-tier venues (e.g., MICCAI, CVPR, NeurIPS, AAAI, or related)
Desired:
- Experience with multimodal data integration, longitudinal outcome prediction, or medical/dental imaging
- Background in radiographic image processingor a strong interest in clinically grounded AI development
- Prior knowledge of dentistry is preferred.
