What are some common challenges faced by Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) workers, and how can they be managed?

FIFO workers often face challenges such as extended periods away from family, adjusting to shift work schedules, and adapting to remote or isolated work environments. Managing these challenges involves maintaining strong communication with loved ones, establishing healthy routines for sleep and exercise, and utilizing onsite resources like counseling or recreational facilities. Employers typically offer support programs and wellness initiatives to help staff adjust and stay connected, so taking advantage of these services can make the FIFO lifestyle more sustainable and rewarding.

To thrive as a Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) worker, you typically need relevant trade qualifications or certifications, strong technical or operational skills, and a good level of physical fitness. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, safety systems, and compliance with occupational health and safety standards is crucial. Standout FIFO workers demonstrate resilience, adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication, especially given the remote and challenging environments. These skills ensure safe, efficient job performance and help maintain well-being and productivity during extended periods away from home.

What are Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) jobs?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) jobs are positions where employees travel to remote work sites, such as mines or oil rigs, for a set period and then return home for a period of leave. This arrangement is common in industries where the work site is far from major population centers. Employees typically fly to the site, live there while working their shifts, and then fly home for their days off. FIFO jobs often have rotating rosters, such as two weeks on and one week off, and can offer high pay but may require extended time away from family. The Job at a Glance

Unique product sales opportunity for a dynamic, friendly, and engaging salesperson. The Heartland Roadshow, established in 2009, is a premier buyer of estate jewelry, precious metals, gold and silver coins, antiques, and collectibles. If you’ve ever seen “Antiques Roadshow”, this is similar to what we do. We set up scheduled Regional acquisition events locations throughout the region, where customers come to sell us their estate items - primarily gold, silver, coins, and watches, collectables and antiques. This is an acquisition-focused role where success is measured by the quality and volume of inventory purchased rather than traditional outbound sales. No cold calling, no prospecting, and no high-pressure sales - just a friendly and informative process. Our robust, fully paid five-week training program focuses on industry-standard techniques for identifying and authenticating precious metals. No jewelry buying experience is necessary - we provide full training. The most important quality we are looking for is the ability to connect effectively with customers.

Schedule & Travel Expectations

Buyers will be assigned to shows both within their home region and in locations that require extended travel. An example of the standard working schedule follows a consistent two-week cycle but may vary occasionally depending on the business needs:

  • 5 days on / 1 day off / 5 days on / 3 days off
  • Week 1 typically runs Tuesday–Saturday
  • Week 2 typically runs Monday–Friday

Buyers should expect to travel approximately two weeks each month.

Travel is fully paid - both your time, as well as all travel expenses.

Travel may include assignments outside your home region where flights and lodging will be arranged. During these travel periods, your scheduled days off will be spent in the destination city. While you’ll have free time to explore or rest, flying home for personal obligations during off-days is not logistically feasible.

When assigned to shows within your home region, travel is typically done using your own reliable transportation. These assignments may offer more personal scheduling flexibility with advance notice and alignment with business needs.

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy variety, are comfortable being on the road, and can commit to a structured schedule with regular travel. There is no cold calling in this role – meet with warm, pre-qualified leads.
