We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond. Whether our customers are accelerating life sciences research, solving complex analytical challenges, improving patient diagnostics and therapies, or increasing productivity in their laboratories, we are here to support them.

This is an onsite role in Marietta, OH.

DESCRIPTION:

As Manager, Electrical Engineering (Embedded Controls), you will lead the development and sustainment of embedded hardware and software control systems for Thermo Fisher’s cold storage and cryogenic product portfolio, including ULT freezers and controlled-rate freezing systems.

In this hands-on leadership role, you will guide a global team of electrical engineers, firmware developers, and technicians to deliver robust, compliant, and scalable control solutions. You will partner closely with Product Management, Product Engineering, Quality, and Regulatory teams to define control strategies, maintain requirements traceability, and ensure products meet performance, safety, and regulatory expectations throughout the product lifecycle.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Embedded Controls & Technical Leadership

  • Lead and manage a global electrical engineering organization responsible for embedded hardware and software development, including teams in North America and India.
  • Own the controls architecture and strategy aligned with cold storage product roadmaps and platform reuse initiatives.
  • Provide technical oversight for embedded firmware, control algorithms, sensing, actuation, and communications.
  • Drive modular, reusable, and scalable control solutions across multiple product platforms.

Product Development & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with R&D, Product Engineering, and Manufacturing teams through all phases of the toll-gate NPD process.
  • Support products manufactured at multiple global production facilities.
  • Contribute to component, sub-system, and system-level technology roadmaps.
  • Lead advanced development and innovation initiatives supporting future NPD programs and intellectual property creation.

Requirements, Compliance & Traceability

  • Partner with Product Management, Quality, and Regulatory to develop and maintain embedded HW/SW requirements, safety analyses, and traceability from customer needs through verification and validation.
  • Ensure electrical and controls designs meet applicable regulatory and certification requirements (e.g., FDA, UL, IEC, CE, CSA).
  • Drive standardization of system-level specifications, test plans, and validation strategies.

Software Development & Tooling

  • Champion modern embedded software development practices using Confluence, Jira, and Git for requirements management, agile execution, version control, and documentation.
  • Establish and maintain best practices for coding standards, reviews, configuration management, and release processes.

People, Program & Financial Leadership

  • Develop budgets, resource plans, and schedules in partnership with NPD project managers and leadership.
  • Balance internal resources, global engineering contractors, and third-party support.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop engineers and technicians to build technical depth and leadership capability.
  • Foster a strong culture of safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Travel: Up to 10% domestic travel.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics, physics, or related discipline
  • Master’s degree preferred

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience leading teams in embedded controls hardware and software development
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing embedded control systems for electromechanical products
  • Experience supporting regulated products (e.g., UL, IEC, FDA, CE)
  • Experience with PCBA development, ICT/FCT testing, and design for manufacturability
  • Experience with circuit design and simulation
  • Experience with data acquisition systems, automated testing, and technical documentation
  • Familiarity with Lean / PPI methodologies and continuous improvement systems

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong foundation in embedded control system design for thermal products
  • Experience developing and reviewing control algorithms (PI/PID) and embedded firmware
  • Proficiency with PCB design tools, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Programming experience in C, C++, or equivalent object-oriented languages. Qt framework experience highly desired
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers, RTOS environments, and embedded operating systems
  • Knowledge of digital and analog circuit design, signal conditioning, and simulation tools
  • Experience with serial and networked communications (e.g., UART, SPI, I2C, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth)
  • Exposure to IoT platforms, cloud connectivity, and embedded data architectures preferred
  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Excellent organizational skills in a fast-paced, multi-project environment
