Is DevOps heavy coding?

DevOps engineers typically write some code to automate processes, manage infrastructure, and develop deployment pipelines, but the role also involves system administration, scripting, and collaboration. The amount of coding varies by organization, with some roles requiring extensive programming skills in languages like Python, Bash, or Go, while others focus more on automation tools and infrastructure management. Overall, DevOps combines coding with operational tasks to improve software delivery and reliability.

What is DevOps and what do DevOps engineers do?

DevOps is a set of practices that combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to shorten the software development lifecycle and deliver high-quality applications continuously. DevOps engineers collaborate with developers and IT staff to automate, integrate, and monitor processes, focusing on continuous integration, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code. Their responsibilities include managing deployment pipelines, automating infrastructure provisioning, ensuring system reliability, and facilitating communication between teams. By improving collaboration and automating workflows, DevOps engineers help organizations deliver software faster and more reliably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer, you need a solid background in software development and IT operations, typically supported by experience with automation, scripting, and cloud platforms. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and cloud services like AWS or Azure, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer), is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and communication skills set outstanding DevOps professionals apart. These competencies are crucial for streamlining development pipelines, ensuring reliable deployments, and fostering effective collaboration between development and operations teams.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior DevOps engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in automation, cloud platforms, and infrastructure management can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or large organizations. Achieving this level often requires advanced certifications, leadership roles, and a strong track record of managing complex systems.

What Is Devops?

DevOps refers to a combination of philosophies, tools, and practices that help to promote an organization's ability to deliver applications and services quickly while improving products at an increased speed over companies that use traditional software development. The increased speed assists organizations in better serving their clients and customers and therefore compete more effectively in the market. Essentially, this model puts development and operations teams together so that engineers can work through the lifecycle of an application and not feel saddled into a single function or skill set. This helps to ensure quality applications and increase development speeds.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps professionals focus on automating software development and deployment processes, and AI tools are increasingly used to enhance automation, monitoring, and decision-making. While AI changes some workflows, DevOps remains a vital role that requires skills in scripting, cloud platforms, and CI/CD tools to ensure reliable and efficient software delivery.

What are some common challenges DevOps professionals face when integrating new tools into existing workflows?

DevOps professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between new tools and legacy systems, resistance to change from team members, and ensuring proper security configurations. Successful integration requires thorough testing, clear documentation, and close collaboration with development and operations teams. Addressing these challenges can lead to smoother deployments and more efficient workflows, making adaptability and strong communication skills essential in this role.

What does a DevOps job do?

A DevOps professional is responsible for combining software development and IT operations to improve deployment frequency, reliability, and automation. They work with tools like Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes to streamline development, testing, and deployment processes, often maintaining infrastructure as code and ensuring system security and performance.

What is the difference between Devops vs System Administrator?

AspectDevopsSystem Administrator
Required credentialsCertifications like AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, LinuxCertifications like CompTIA Linux+, Microsoft Certified
Work environmentCollaborative, development-focused teams, often AgileOperational, maintenance-focused, on-premises or cloud
Employer usageTech companies, startups, cloud service providersEnterprises, data centers, IT departments

Devops and System Administrators share overlapping skills in Linux, scripting, and cloud platforms. However, Devops focuses on automating development and deployment processes, while System Administrators primarily manage and maintain IT infrastructure. Both roles are essential in modern IT environments but serve different operational purposes.

Job description

About the job:

Contribute to developing cutting-edge AI systems, while enjoying the flexibility of remote work and setting your own schedule.

We are looking for an existing Coder (this is an opportunity to work with us as an independent contractor) to help advance AI development. As a DataAnnotation’s coder, you’ll be part of a growing community of over 100,000 professionals — including front-end, back-end, full-stack, machine learning, and other engineers — who are driving real-world impact in AI development.

Our platform offers an engaging blend of flexibility and challenge: you’ll work closely with state-of-the-art AI models to take on programming tasks that include creating and solving challenging coding problems, building beautiful apps with rich functionality, and synthesizing insights through data analysis and visualization. Your work directly contributes to refining intelligent systems that learn, adapt, and evolve.

To get started, once you sign up for an account, you'll take a short assessment (this serves as our version of an interview). If you pass that assessment, you’ll receive an email confirmation, and paid work will become available to you through our platform.

Advantages of contracting with us:

  • You'll be able to choose which projects you want to work on and when
  • You work on your own schedule, on your own computer, from the comfort of your own home
  • Projects are paid hourly starting at $50-100+/hr, with bonus rates available on some projects

Responsibilities:

  • Give AI chatbots coding challenges and evaluate their outputs
  • Evaluate the quality produced by AI models for correctness and performance

Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English (native or bilingual level)
  • Detail-oriented
  • Experience with algorithms, data structures, and debugging workflows
  • A current, in progress, or completed Bachelor's is preferred but not required

Note:

Payment is made via PayPal. We will never ask for any money from you. PayPal will handle any currency conversions from USD. This job is only available to those in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Those located outside of these countries will not see work or assessments available on our site at this time. This is an independent contractor position.
