Job description

Position Summary...Join Walmart’s Derivator Platform team within the Catalog organization. Derivator is a high-scale, domain-agnostic rule derivation platform that processes hundreds of thousands of events per second with 99.99% availability, powering critical business decisions across inventory, fulfillment, seller eligibility, shipping restrictions, and customer experiences at Walmart scale.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will architect, build, and operate the microservices and data pipelines at the heart of Walmart’s supply chain intelligence. We are looking for engineers who are highly motivated to leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate design, coding, testing, and code review — treating AI as a core part of their engineering workflow, not just an occasional aid. What you'll do...About the Team
  • This is a platform engineering role — the Derivator platform is a shared service powering 15+ business domains across Walmart (inventory exception, replenishment, fulfillment path eligibility, one-day shipping, seller eligibility, gifting, cross-border shipping restrictions, customer subscriptions, and more). Your work directly influences the shopping experience for millions of Walmart customers every day.
  • We are building an AI-forward engineering culture — engineers who proactively integrate AI tools into design discussions, sprint planning, code reviews, and architecture decisions will have a direct impact on team velocity and platform quality.
  • The team operates at the intersection of real-time event processing and complex rule evaluation — engineers who thrive on making large-scale systems observable, resilient, and developer-friendly will find this role deeply rewarding.
  • The platform is actively growing — current investment areas include multi-domain rule sequencing, configuration UI tooling to reduce operational overhead, cloud infrastructure migrations, batch integration improvements, and tenant-level cost metering.
  • You will work across the full engineering lifecycle — from design and development to deployment, monitoring, and incident response — in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.
What You’ll Do
  • Design and build distributed microservices across the full derivation lifecycle — inbound data processing, core rule evaluation, outbound distribution, scheduling, simulation, auditing, and notification — deployed on Walmart’s private cloud infrastructure
  • Own high-throughput Kafka event streaming pipelines processing hundreds of thousands of events per pipeline; design for fault isolation, multi-region routing, and horizontal auto-scaling
  • Develop and evolve a domain-agnostic rule execution engine, enabling configurable business rule evaluation across supply chain domains such as inventory management, fulfillment eligibility, seller performance, geo-shipping restrictions, customer experiences, and more
  • Build and optimize data persistence and indexing layers across Cassandra, BigQuery, and search indexes — supporting real-time derivation, sweep processing, and audit/monitoring workflows
  • Drive large-scale Apache Spark batch processing jobs on cloud infrastructure to identify and fan out impacted entities across millions of records following rule changes
  • Implement simulation and sweep capabilities — real-time and offline rule evaluation to assess business impact before deployment, enabling data-driven decision-making with downloadable reports
  • Actively use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Wibey, or equivalent) for code generation, design brainstorming, test authoring, documentation, and code review — and champion their adoption within the team
  • Ensure platform reliability and observability through metrics, distributed tracing, lag-based alerting, and enforcing 99.99% SLA commitments
  • Contribute to platform evolution: infrastructure migrations, batch processing integration, multi-domain rule sequencing, UI tooling for configuration management, and cost metering
  • Collaborate with product managers, domain teams, and rule engine engineers to onboard new derivation domains and attributes with minimal friction
  • Drive technical roadmap priorities and mentor engineers across the team
What You’ll Bring Required:
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience building production-grade, high-throughput distributed systems
  • Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Boot — RESTful microservices, dependency injection, async processing, and performance tuning
  • Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka — producer/consumer patterns, consumer group management, lag monitoring, partition-level design, and exactly-once semantics
  • Experience with Cassandra — data modeling, partition key design, tuning for high write/read throughput
  • Experience with BigQuery — large-scale analytical queries, table partitioning, and integration with batch pipelines
  • Experience with Apache Spark — large-scale distributed batch processing, job optimization, and GCP Dataproc or equivalent
  • Familiarity with container orchestration (Kubernetes or equivalent) — deployment, scaling, health checks, and namespace management
  • Experience building event-driven microservices architectures with strong understanding of fault isolation, idempotency, retry patterns, and eventual consistency
  • Demonstrated use of AI-assisted development tools (Copilot, Cursor, or similar) as part of daily engineering workflow — for coding, testing, debugging, and documentation
  • Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills in distributed systems environments
Preferred:
  • Experience with rule engines or business rule frameworks — applying configurable rules to data at scale
  • Exposure to observability and distributed tracing tools for event-driven systems
  • Understanding of supply chain, fulfillment, or e-commerce domain concepts (inventory management, fulfillment paths, seller operations, shipping logistics)
  • Experience with multi-region event routing and consistency patterns
  • Experience with GCP for cloud-native workloads
  • Passion for exploring and evaluating emerging AI coding tools and sharing best practices with the team
