Advanced Process Controls Technician

The Advanced Process Controls Technician is a member of the Process Controls team serving as a technical expert responsible for identifying, developing, and supporting advanced control opportunities and their required instrumentation with a goal of continuously improving safety, reliability and operational effectiveness at their mill. This position supports critical projects and company initiatives including lean manufacturing and digital transformation efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and maintain various instrumentation: MAP Q, Pulp Expert, Kappa Analyzer, MCA, RM-3, RM-5, OC2R consistency measures, and dryness meters
  • Troubleshoot and maintain new instrumentation installed with backend transformative controls project (Wood Chip Moisture, Chip Bulk Density)
  • Maintain and update control system electrical and instrumentation documentation, standards, and ensure compliance with reliability improvement initiatives
  • Communicate disturbances, issues, and opportunities within the Process Controls group and to maintenance / operations organizations
  • Provide shift start-up coverage during field days and outages
  • Provide on-call technical support, including phone troubleshooting as needed
  • Learn Valmet DNA System; training to be provided
  • Working knowledge of paper and sample processing; training to be provided
  • Knowledge of industrial data interfaces
  • Support Asset Performance Management Team
  • Champion and develop training for E&I technicians for maintenance / support of advanced instrumentation systems
  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians to drive reliability and support cost reduction efforts
  • Actively identify opportunities at the mill where improved instrumentation, electrical systems, or data availability can drive safety, reliability, and productivity improvements
  • Follow all safety, electrical, and instrumentation standards while supporting digital initiatives
  • Adhere to cybersecurity and OT security requirements related to connected devices and data access

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • 3 years or more experience working in the E&I field; Instrumentation, DCS, PLC, and Electric Drives
  • Outstanding troubleshooting, communications and interpersonal skills
  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent experience in Electrical, Instrumentation, or a related field
  • Experience working with industrial instrumentation, sensors, control systems and field devices
  • Familiarity with mill, plant, or asset-intensive operating environments preferred
  • Strong understanding of electrical and instrumentation fundamentals, including calibration and troubleshooting
  • Working knowledge of control systems (PLC/DCS), field networks, and industrial communications
  • Understanding of how instrumentation data is used in monitoring, analytics, and operational decision-making.
  • Interest in Advanced Process Control strategies
  • Ability to document work clearly and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical teams
  • Strong sense of ownership over job duties and equipment
