What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Product Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Product Manager, you need expertise in product strategy, market analysis, and cross-functional leadership, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with product management tools (like Jira or Aha!), agile methodologies, and data analytics platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for driving product vision, aligning teams, and delivering successful products in competitive markets.

How do Senior Product Managers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product's development cycle?

Senior Product Managers play a central role in coordinating efforts between engineering, design, marketing, and sales teams throughout the product development lifecycle. They facilitate communication to ensure alignment on product vision, prioritize features based on customer and business needs, and help resolve any roadblocks that arise. By leading regular meetings, setting clear goals, and gathering input from various stakeholders, Senior Product Managers ensure that all teams are working efficiently toward a successful product launch.

What are Senior Product Managers?

They work closely with cross-functional teams such as engineering, design, marketing, and sales to ensure that a product meets business objectives and customer needs. Their role is critical in delivering successful products and driving business growth.

Job description

Who are we?
Smarsh empowers its customers to manage risk and unleash intelligence in their digital communications. Our growing community of over 6500 organizations in regulated industries counts on Smarsh every day to help them spot compliance, legal or reputational risks in 80+ communication channels before those risks become regulatory fines or headlines. Relentless innovation has fueled our journey to consistent leadership recognition from analysts like Gartner and Forrester, and our sustained, aggressive growth has landed Smarsh in the annual Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing American companies since 2008.
Product Operations is the connective tissue between Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Sales. As Senior Product Operations Manager, you will own the systems, processes, and rituals that enable our product organization to move faster, ship with more predictability, and make better decisions with data. This role reports directly to the SVP of Product Operations and is a high-visibility seat that directly shapes how we build and deliver product at scale.
Without strong product operations, fast-growing product organizations accumulate process debt, ship late, and lose alignment. This role exists because the way we operate is a competitive advantage. The person in this seat will have direct influence on how the entire product organization functions and will be visible to product leadership and the executive team from day one.
How will you contribute?
  • Design and continuously improve the operating model for the product org, including planning cadences, intake processes, prioritization frameworks, and launch checklists.
  • Define and own the product metrics infrastructure: what we track, how we report it, and how those insights drive decisions across Product, GTM, and leadership.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Sales to eliminate friction in cross-functional execution, from roadmap to release to revenue.
  • Lead and operationalize product launches end-to-end, coordinating dependencies, timelines, and stakeholder readiness across teams.
  • Identify and close gaps in product lifecycle management, including updates, deprecations, and end-of-life processes.
  • Build and maintain a single source of truth for product operations documentation, process standards, and best practices.
  • Surface and manage risks in product development and launch cycles before they become blockers.
  • Identify and drive adoption of AI tools across the SDLC, from requirements generation and sprint planning to testing, release documentation, and post-launch analysis, measuring impact on velocity and quality over time.

What will you bring?
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in Product Operations, Product Management, or a directly adjacent operations role within a SaaS or tech company.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and scale cross-functional processes that improved execution speed or quality, with specific, measurable outcomes.
  • Strong analytical skills and hands-on experience with product and business metrics; you can move from raw data to a decision-driving insight independently.
  • Proven experience managing complex, multi-team product launches.
  • Hands-on fluency with AI tools in daily work, using AI to accelerate requirements writing, competitive research, sprint documentation, data analysis, and stakeholder communications, with a track record of measurably improving product velocity or team output.
  • Familiarity with Agile or similar iterative development methodologies.
  • Clear, direct communicator who can operate at the individual contributor level and in the executive boardroom.
  • This role has direct exposure to product leadership and the executive team from day one, requiring the presence, preparation, and judgment to operate credibly at that level immediately.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience building or maturing a Product Operations function from the ground up.
  • Exposure to tools such as Jira, Confluence, PowerBI, Gainsight, or similar product and analytics platforms.
  • Experience at a company that has scaled from Series B through IPO or equivalent growth stage.
  • Experience working within a private equity-owned company, including familiarity with PE reporting cadences, portfolio-level expectations, and operating under return-driven mandates.

What do we offer?
  • Healthcare insurance: We provide medical, dental, and vision insurance, and a flexible spending account that allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Stock options.
  • Personal time off: A healthy work-life balance is critical to your success at the office. Smarsh offers a "take-what-you-need" time off policy as well as flexible work arrangements.
  • 401K Match: Smarsh provides a 4% 401K match for which employees are fully vested on day one.
  • Sabbatical: The Smarsh sabbatical programme provides a time to recharge, study or simply do something you are passionate about away from the workplace. Employees are eligible after six years of service.
  • Recognition: We're big on kudos for a job well done. Our employee-recognition programme enables co-workers to nominate their peers who best embody our core values for recognition.

$170,000 - $190,000 a year
The above salary range represents Smarsh's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting. Any applicable bonus programs will be discussed during the recruiting process.
The salary for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, location, specialty and training.
Local cost of living assessments are done for each new hire at the time of offer.
Don't meet every requirement? Apply anyway! We value diverse candidates and encourage applications, even if you don't perfectly match the job description. Studies have shown that some strong candidates may self-select out of the interview process prematurely, at Smarsh we encourage an inclusive, high-performing environment.
