Siemens Electrification & Automation (EA)is continuing to expand and is seeking a motivated, skilled Protection and Automation Proposals Application Engineer to support project proposals and solution design for customers throughout the United States. This mid-career role is ideal for engineers who have developed technical expertise in power systems, protection & control, and automation, and who are ready to take ownership of proposal preparation and customer-facing technical communications. In this role, you will work closely with senior Applications Engineers, Sales, and cross-functional teams to review specifications, configure solutions, and prepare technical and commercial proposals. You will also provide technical guidance to junior team members and help improve engineering processes and proposal tools.

This hybrid position is based at our corporate headquarters in Wendell, NC. Located in the heart of the Research Triangle about 20 minutes east of Raleigh, Wendell offers top-rated schools, a mild climate, easy access to mountains and coast, and a cost of living that allows our compensation to go further.

You’ll make a difference by:
  • Review and interpret customer technical specifications and requirements for protection, automation, and power distribution systems.
  • Independently develop accurate, compliant technical and commercial proposals, including detailed system architectures, bill of materials (BOM), panel layouts, and supporting technical narratives.
  • Coordinate with Sales, Engineering, and Project Management to gather necessary information, clarify requirements, and ensure timely and accurate proposal delivery.
  • Interface with customers to answer technical questions, provide clarification, and optimize proposed solutions to meet project objectives and competitive pricing.
  • Ensure proposals adhere to relevant standards (IEEE, IEC, UL, NEMA) and identify any risks or deviations.
  • Assist in mentoring junior engineers; provide technical expertise and support for their development.
  • Collaborate on updating proposal templates, tools, and documentation; contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in meetings and site visits; occasional travel (up to 20%) may be required.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and proactive engagement in assigned tasks.
You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or a similar field from an accredited university.
  • Four (4) or more years of professional work experience (internship, co-op, or part-time engineering roles may count towards this qualification).
  • Strong foundational knowledge of electrical power system principles (Generation, Transmission, Distribution) and protection/control schemes.Knowledge and experience with the application of electrical distribution products and power systems/ power delivery.
  • Ability to analyze customer’s technical specifications, drawings, and datasheets to interpret and apply appropriate Siemens or 3rd party product offerings to meet the customers’ expectations in cost-effective and timely manner, offer alternative solutions to optimize profitability while meeting customer needs.
  • Working knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, UL, NEMA standards; awareness of IEC standards and their application.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical document preparation and proposal writing.
  • Basic financial knowledge to understand and participate in ongoing business planning and support the product as well as project lifecycle management processes.
  • Experience with commercial terms and contract negotiations.
  • Ability to identify market trends and using this information, work closely with Marketing and Technology to create and justify projects to close the identified gaps.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% based on business needs.
  • Willingness to relocate to the greater Raleigh, NC area.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Siemens EA products and software tools.
  • Experience with protective relays and their application
  • Experience with automation controllers and their applications
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Experience in proposal process automation or CRM/ERP systems such as Salesforce
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet target timelines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Experience with Microgrid and Photovoltaic Control Systems.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and understand I/O mapping between devices, relays, and RTUs/PLCs
  • Experience with Electrical and 2D Layout drawing tools such as AutoCAD, Visio, etc.
  • Exposure to protective relay configuration software (e.g., DIGSI, SEL AcSELerator, PCM600).
  • Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, UL, and NEMA standards for power distribution applications, especially Protection and Automation.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as IEEE C37 series, ANSI device functions, or IEC 61850.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

The pay range for this position is $74,970 - $128,520 annually with a target incentive of 5% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
