Job description

ABOUT ROCKET LAB

Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, complete spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more – all with the goal of opening access to space. The rockets and satellites we build and launch enable some of the most ambitious and vital space missions globally, supporting scientific exploration, Earth observation and missions to combat climate change, national security, and exciting new technology demonstrations.

Our Electron rocket has become the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually and has delivered more than 230 satellites to orbit, all while we work to develop Neutron, our upcoming medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Our Space Systems business designs and builds our extensive line of satellites, payloads, and their components, including spacecraft that have been selected to support NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and components used on the James Webb Space Telescope.

ABOUT NEUTRON

Neutron is a medium lift launch vehicle capable of delivering the mega constellations of tomorrow, high assurance payloads, and human spaceflight. As a highly reusable launch platform, Neutron will deliver a highly cost-effective and reliable launch solution leveraging Rocket Lab's proven execution history with the Electron program. If you're interested in joining a high performing team, pushing the boundaries with a clean sheet development of re-usable liquid launch vehicle, this is your opportunity!

TEST & LAUNCH OPERATIONS ENGINEER I

Test and Launch Operations Engineers are responsible for taking years of design and manufacturing to flight in the operation of launch vehicles. As a member of Rocket Lab's Test & Launch Operations team, you will be directly responsible for operating the Electron and Neutron launch vehicles from the control room throughout all phases of integrated systems testing and launch operations. You will execute complex test sequences, monitor real-time ground systems data, make critical go/no-go decisions, and command ground support systems during countdown and flight operations.

This role is within the Ground Systems discipline, responsible for launch pad infrastructure, ground support equipment (GSE), fluid systems, and all facility operations that enable launch.

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO

  • Support development, integration, and testing of launch pad infrastructure, GSE, and facility systems.
  • Lead and execute testing campaigns, including GSE commissioning and ground system readiness checks.
  • Manage configuration and verification of launch pad hardware and facility systems.
  • Develop operational procedures, test plans, and emergency response protocols for ground operations.
  • Design and improve HMIs for ground control systems to enhance operator efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve real-time issues during test and launch operations.

YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS TEST & LAUNCH OPERATIONS ENGINEER I

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (preferably Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Mechatronic Engineering)
  • 1+ years of experience in engineering design, test and/or operations, in the focus of electrical/software engineering
  • 2+ years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE

  • 2+ years of experience in engineering design, test, and/or operations
  • Background in launch complex infrastructure, pad systems, or ground support equipment design/operations
  • Solid understanding and hands-on experience working with fluid systems, cryogenic systems, pressurized systems, and hazardous materials handling
  • Good understanding and practical experience conducting real-time hazardous operations with propellants, high-pressure gases, or hydraulic systems
  • Experience developing operational procedures, test plans, CONOPS documentation, or emergency response procedures

This position may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, computer work, and occasional exposure to moderate levels of noise, dust, and fumes in production areas.

The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the state of Virginia's pay transparency requirements. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
Base salary is only one part of Rocket Lab's compensation package for this role. WHAT TO EXPECT

We're on a mission to unlock the potential of space to improve life on Earth, but that's not an easy task. It takes hard work, determination, relentless innovation, teamwork, grit, and an unwavering commitment to achieving what others often deem impossible. Our people out-think, out-work, and out-pace. We pride ourselves on having each other's backs, checking our egos at the door, and rolling up our sleeves on all tasks big and small. We thrive under pressure, work to tight deadlines, and our focus is always on how we can deliver, rather than dwelling on the challenges that stand in the way.
