RimePro Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help set top performers apart. These competencies ensure the safety, stability, and efficiency of building projects while facilitating collaboration with architects, contractors, and clients.

What are some common challenges Structural Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Structural Engineers often collaborate with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers to deliver integrated building designs. One common challenge is balancing aesthetic or functional requirements from architects with structural safety and code compliance. Effective communication and coordination are essential to resolve conflicts, manage project timelines, and ensure that structural solutions align with the broader vision of the project. Structural Engineers should be proactive in attending coordination meetings and using collaborative design tools to streamline teamwork.

What are structural engineers?

Structural engineers are specialized professionals who design, analyze, and ensure the safety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels. They work to make sure these structures can withstand various forces, such as gravity, wind, and earthquakes, while remaining safe and functional. Structural engineers use mathematics, physics, and material science to select appropriate construction materials and methods. Their expertise is essential in the planning and construction phases, as well as in inspecting existing structures for safety and compliance.

Are structural engineers paid well?

Structural engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, education, and location. They often work in design firms, construction, or consulting, and higher levels of certification and specialized skills can lead to increased pay.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, PE licenseRequires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing building structures, often in office and construction sitesWorks on infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and water systems, in offices and field sites
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and structural design firmsBroader industry scope including transportation, environmental, and urban planning

Structural engineers primarily focus on designing and analyzing building frameworks to ensure safety and stability, while civil engineers work on a wider range of infrastructure projects. Both roles require similar credentials and often collaborate, but their core responsibilities and project types differ.

Job description

Position Overview

The Lead Design Engineer serves as the technical leader for the Design Engineering team, driving the development and integration of modular power infrastructure and mission critical systems. This role is responsible for establishing system layout strategies, integration standards, and scalable design methodologies that support efficient manufacturing and consistent project execution.

The Lead Design Engineer oversees multi-disciplinary coordination across mechanical, electrical, structural, and architectural systems, ensuring all designs are technically sound, manufacturable, and aligned with production and operational goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical development and integration of modular infrastructure systems and product platforms.
  • Define and maintain engineering standards, layout methodologies, and integration best practices across all projects.
  • Oversee system architecture development including equipment layouts, module configurations, and interface coordination.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction across all design efforts to ensure consistency, quality, and scalability.
  • Mentor and guide Design Engineers and Senior Design Engineers through design reviews, technical problem-solving, and project execution.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, and external partners to ensure fully integrated and buildable designs.
  • Lead resolution of complex system integration and layout conflicts involving multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Oversee the development and quality of 3D models, general arrangement (GA) drawings, BOMs, and fabrication packages.
  • Review and approve third-party engineering deliverables including structural, mechanical, and architectural packages.
  • Drive implementation of Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA) principles to support production efficiency and scalability.
  • Support prototype builds, manufacturing integration, and troubleshooting of system-level design challenges.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on design standardization, layout optimization, and process refinement.
  • Manage engineering change processes, configuration control, and design documentation standards.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Design Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in product design, manufacturing, or system integration engineering.
  • Strong experience managing multi-disciplinary system layouts involving electrical, mechanical, and structural components.
  • Advanced proficiency with 3D CAD and modeling platforms such as SolidWorks, Revit, Inventor, or similar software.
  • Expertise in developing general arrangement (GA) drawings, equipment layouts, and integrated system designs.
  • Strong understanding of electrical equipment layouts, NEC clearance requirements, and modular integration standards.
  • Knowledge of structural systems including frames, weldments, lifting/rigging considerations, and support structures.
  • Experience integrating HVAC, thermal management, and enclosure systems into modular designs.
  • Strong understanding of DFMA methodologies, manufacturing workflows, and production-driven design practices.
  • Experience with BOM management, configuration control, and engineering change processes.
  • Proven ability to evaluate and approve third-party engineering deliverables.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and technical mentoring skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting data center, power infrastructure, or mission critical product environments.
  • Background in modular construction, prefabrication, or electromechanical manufacturing systems.
  • Experience with highly standardized or scalable product platforms.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
