    Job description

    Overview

NaphCare is hiring a treating Psychiatrist to join our specialized THRIVE Jail Based Competency to Stand Trial Treatment Program in San Diego, CA.

The Jail-Based Competency Treatment (JBCT) program, a California Department of State Hospitals (DSH) satellite program, operates as a 30-bed adult male unit at the San Diego Central Jail. Our patients receive psychiatric and mental health services aimed at restoring their competency to stand trial so that they may proceed with pending criminal charges in the court system and move forward in their lives in a healthier place.

Although the position is an onsite, full-time (40 hour/week) position, NaphCare will work with the candidate to determine a schedule that best meets the employee and program needs between business days of Monday through Friday (e.g., four 10-hour days vs. five 8-hour days).

    Responsibilities

The Psychiatrist will maintain overall clinical treatment responsibility for the medication management of up to 30 adult male patients in the THRIVE JBCT unit, including weekly medication management sessions/chart review, one treatment team meeting and consultations, and involuntary medication order protocols. The Psychiatrist will not perform competency to stand trial evaluations and is only responsible for treatment.

While the Psychiatrist is not formerly on-call after scheduled hours, infrequently an occasional phone consultation by the JBCT Director may be warranted. The position may be either full-time, full-benefits with paid time off or may be filled as a contractor; either status has coverage for when the Psychiatrist is on leave.

The ideal candidate has experience (1) treating adults with serious mental illness, (2) working in a psychiatric hospital or correctional setting, and (3) working within a multidisciplinary team.

    Qualifications
    • Must hold a current, unrestricted Psychiatrist license in California
    • Current DEA registration
    • A valid CPR card (or ability and willingness to attain one)
    • Eligible or qualified by the state laws/regulations to practice psychiatry
    • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in primary specialty of psychiatric care
    • Experience in a correctional healthcare or inpatient mental health care setting highly preferred
    • Sufficient electronic medical record and/or computer skills
    • Must pass the facility's criminal background check and drug screening

    Physical Capabilities:

Must have the ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks like CPR, all while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.
