Job description

Weekend Hospice Nurse (RN) – Fri - Sun

Winston-Salem, NC Service Area | 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Every Patient. Every Family. Every Time.

At Mountain Valley, what we do is personal, for the patients and families we serve, and for those of us who choose this work. We care for individuals facing serious and terminal illness, supporting them through physical, emotional, social, and spiritual challenges. We also help our communities better understand end-of-life care.

For those called to this work, there is nothing more meaningful.

An Excellent Opportunity

Are you looking for a nursing role without a full caseload and nonstop visits—but still want to provide meaningful, hands-on care during some of life's most important moments?

This weekend position is on call from home, but it is not fully remote. You must be available to travel for in-person visits when patient needs arise—including urgent symptom management and end-of-life care.

You'll cover Friday through Sunday (8:00 AM – 8:00 PM), responding to patient and family needs as they arise. There are no assigned caseload or scheduled visits—care is driven by patient needs and can vary throughout the shift.

In this role, you will provide phone triage and support, travel to patient homes when needed, and deliver care for symptom management, active decline, and at times, support patients and families at the end of life—including during and immediately after death. These are often the moments when your presence matters most.

What to Expect

  • On-call from home (not continuously working)
  • Must be able to leave home for in-person visits
  • Three 12-hour shifts (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

Compensation

  • Competitive pay with afterhours shift differential

Qualifications

  • Active RN license (NC)
  • Hospice or home health experience preferred
  • Comfort providing end-of-life care and supporting families after death
  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to work independently
  • Must reside within a reasonable driving distance of the Winston-Salem service area

At Mountain Valley Hospice, we believe hospice is about living well. Our afterhours nurses provide calm, compassionate support to patients and families, especially during the most critical and vulnerable moments.

If you're looking for a role with a different pace, meaningful work, and the ability to be present when it matters most, we'd welcome the conversation.

At Mountain Valley, we are committed to providing an environment of mutual respect with a diverse workforce; we make staffing decisions based on knowledge, skills and abilities. Mountain Valley Hospice is an Equal Opportunity Employer that does not discriminate on the basis of actual or perceived, race, religion, color, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), sexual orientation, parental status, national origin, age, disability, family medical history or genetic information, political affiliation, military service, any other non-merit based factor or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state or local laws.
