Monitise Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Site Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Site Reliability Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, systems administration, and software engineering, often supported by a degree in a technical field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), container orchestration (such as Kubernetes), infrastructure as code (Terraform or Ansible), and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana) is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a proactive mindset help SREs excel at incident management and cross-functional collaboration. These skills are crucial for maintaining system reliability, minimizing downtime, and driving continuous improvement in complex technical environments.

What are some of the most common challenges Site Reliability Engineers face when balancing system reliability with rapid software delivery?

Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) often navigate the challenge of maintaining highly reliable systems while supporting fast-paced software releases. This involves managing incidents, automating processes to reduce manual toil, and working closely with development teams to embed reliability into the software development lifecycle. SREs must carefully prioritize their efforts between proactive improvements and urgent, reactive fire-fighting. Effective communication and collaboration with both operations and development teams are crucial to ensuring service uptime without slowing down innovation.

What is a Site Reliability Engineer?

A Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) is a professional who applies software engineering principles to infrastructure and operations problems. Their primary goal is to create scalable and highly reliable software systems, often bridging the gap between development and IT operations. SREs automate tasks, monitor system health, respond to incidents, and work to improve system reliability and performance. They also help define service level objectives (SLOs) and ensure systems meet customer expectations for uptime and availability.

What is the difference between Site Reliability Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectSite Reliability EngineerDevOps Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a computer science degree, certifications like AWS, Google Cloud, or KubernetesSimilar credentials, often with cloud certifications and scripting skills
Work EnvironmentFocuses on maintaining and improving system reliability, often in large-scale production environmentsWorks on automation, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes across development and operations teams
Industry UsageCommon in tech, cloud services, and large-scale enterprise companiesWidely used in software development, cloud, and IT organizations

Both roles require strong technical skills and cloud knowledge, but SREs focus more on system reliability and uptime, while DevOps engineers emphasize automation and deployment processes. They often collaborate but have distinct primary responsibilities.

Job description

ABOUT THIS FEATURED OPPORTUNITY

This organization is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to support Clarity, a business planning tool, and Halo, an internal IT inventory platform used to track applications and the infrastructure they run on. These applications support critical internal engineering workflows and operate within large-scale internal compute environments.

This role will focus on supporting the reliability, performance, and day-to-day operations of these environments while partnering closely with a senior SRE on the team. The engineer will assist with operational support, troubleshooting, deployment activities, automation efforts, and infrastructure maintenance across Linux-based systems and DevOps environments.

The ideal candidate will bring experience supporting production systems, working within SDLC and deployment processes, troubleshooting application and infrastructure issues, and contributing to operational reliability initiatives. This is a strong opportunity for an engineer looking to deepen their experience within Site Reliability Engineering, infrastructure operations, and modern deployment environments.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU

As a Systems Engineer / SRE Support Engineer, you will support internal developers and applications across infrastructure, deployment, and operational workflows. You will work closely with the senior SRE to troubleshoot issues, improve reliability, support deployment processes, and assist with automation initiatives across Linux-based production environments.

In this role, you will:

  • Support day-to-day operational and tactical infrastructure activities across internal application environments
  • Partner closely with the senior SRE to support production systems and operational initiatives
  • Troubleshoot infrastructure and application performance issues, including stuck processes, crashes, bottlenecks, and service degradation
  • Support Oracle database troubleshooting efforts, including query analysis, bottleneck identification, and performance optimization
  • Assist development teams with SDLC activities, deployment workflows, and operational support
  • Support CI/CD pipelines, deployment processes, and GitHub workflow administration
  • Run and support deployments across Kubernetes and VM-based environments
  • Write and maintain Python and Bash/shell scripts to automate operational tasks and improve efficiency
  • Support Linux-based systems and troubleshoot operating system-level issues
  • Assist with authentication and certificate-related support activities
  • Work with monitoring, operational tooling, and infrastructure troubleshooting across multiple systems
  • Contribute to automation-focused initiatives that reduce manual operational overhead for the SRE organization

This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with modern infrastructure environments, DevOps workflows, Kubernetes operations, and production systems engineering while working alongside an experienced SRE team.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS (Top 3 Must-Have Skills)

1. Strong Linux, Command Line, and Scripting Experience

5+ years of experience supporting Linux-based production environments with strong command-line proficiency. Must understand how Linux systems operate, how to troubleshoot issues safely in production, and how to resolve operational problems effectively. Experience with Python scripting, Bash/shell scripting, and automation is required.

2. SDLC, DevOps, and Deployment Knowledge

Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes, deployment methodologies, GitHub workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and operational support for development teams. Experience supporting deployments across Kubernetes and VM-based environments is highly preferred.

3. Production Troubleshooting and Generalist Engineering Mindset

Ability to troubleshoot infrastructure, database, and application performance issues across production systems. Experience identifying bottlenecks, supporting Oracle query troubleshooting and optimization efforts, and working across multiple technologies in a generalist systems engineering capacity is critical.

NICE TO HAVES

  • Kubernetes administration or Kubernetes-as-a-Service experience
  • Experience assisting with deployment pipeline setup and automation
  • GitHub administration and permissions management experience
  • Familiarity with Oracle database environments and query optimization
  • Experience supporting authentication and certificate management
  • Exposure to internal cloud or elastic compute environments
  • Kafka or event-streaming platform experience
  • Familiarity with AI/LLM tools such as Claude for engineering productivity
  • Experience working alongside Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) or platform engineering teams
