Job description
Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Manual Machinist & Mechanical Assembler to join our team.
We are a premier machine builder specializing in automation equipment for the industrial sector. We combine precision machining with complex assemblies of pneumatics, controls, electronics, and hydraulics to build equipment used by manufacturing companies worldwide. Because we are a small-to-medium-sized shop, every team member has an outsized impact on the business, and the day-to-day work is highly varied.
Primarily, you will be operating a manual horizontal lathe, often post-processing partially built assemblies and segments mounted on turning jigs to ensure perfectly smooth transitions and exact runout. When not on the lathe, you will step into a mechanical assembly role, building high-mix, low-volume automation equipment. We are looking for a hands-on builder who possesses a strong mechanical mindset, excels at reading blueprints and GD&T, and takes pride in holding tight tolerances.

Responsibilities:
- Manual Machining: Set up and operate manual horizontal lathes to turn components and partially built assemblies to exact diameters, ensuring perfect runout and smooth transitions.
- Specialized Turning: Mount and turn segments on specialized turning jigs as a stage of the mechanical build process.
- Precision Measurement: Consistently use micrometers, calipers, dials, and other precision tools to measure, inspect, and verify critical dimensions.
- Complex Mechanical Assembly: Build detailed mechanical systems consisting of machined parts, welded components, shafts, pins, and fasteners to print and standard work.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and follow engineering drawings, work instructions, and strict GD&T tolerances to ensure correct fit, alignment, and function across varied builds.
- Pneumatics & Integration: Assemble pneumatic actuators, route and connect air lines, and ensure components are installed cleanly and safely.
- Troubleshooting: Identify assembly constraints or machining issues early, adjust setups as needed, and propose practical fixes to the team.
- Process Quality: Execute in-process quality checks and complete required production documentation for builds and traceability.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Machining Experience: Proven experience operating manual horizontal lathes, specifically with turning operations.
- Precision Skills: High proficiency with precision measurement tools (calipers, dials, micrometers, scales) and holding tight tolerances.
- Technical Literacy: Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, build documentation, and GD&T.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Experience assembling complicated mechanical systems. Backgrounds in automotive repair, industrial maintenance, or millwright work translate well to the assembly portion of this role.
- Adaptability: Ability to smoothly transition between precision machining and hands-on mechanical assembly within a dynamic job-shop environment.
- Team Oriented: A positive, energetic attitude with a desire to collaborate, troubleshoot, and build things the right way.
