    Job Description:

    The Packaging Designer shall design packages for electronic parts and equipment that provides adequate protection during internal handling, storage and shipping. The designs must meet government and commercial standards for packaging and documentation. The successful candidate will use Pro Engineer and/or Creo to design and document all methods and produce the required documentation. The Packaging Designer will communicate designs verbally and in writing and will interface and support multiple organizations (Engineering, Purchasing, QA and Manufacturing) during the packing design process. Combine art, business and engineering into package design while considering the function, aesthetics, production costs and usability of shipping and transportation packaging design.

    Preferred Knowledge:

    • Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, etc.)
    • Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Excel, etc.)
    • Email Marketing Virtual Meetings (Zoom, MS Teams)
    • Creo CAD Software

    Essential Functions:

    • Determines requirements and designs packing for parts and equipment to provide adequate protection during internal handling, storage, and shipping.
    • Reviews design of product to determine type of packing required, considering such factors as quantities involved, economy of packing and freight classification.
    • Investigates possibility of using packing materials as part of the manufacturing or internal handling, adapting packing designs accordingly.
    • Consults with product Engineering Sections to exchange design information.
    • Investigates new packing materials and methods.
    • Sketches design for sample.
    • Obtains parts and makes up or arranges for construction of sample package.
    • Participates in performing tests such as drop test to simulate shipping conditions.
    • Determines requirements of container and packing aids such as liners, padding, braces, and other protective agents and lists packing requirements.
    • Prepares and submits specifications or sketches of cartons, boxes and packing agents to drafting to have standard drawings made.
    • Arranges for procurement of sample packing items through contact with packing vendors when required and checks samples for adherence to specifications.
    • Checks packing drawings.
    • Determines quantity and prepares list of packing material required for each unit.
    • Assures adequacy of design for intended use such as production, handling, packing, and shipping, by discussing problems with personnel concerned.
    • Participates in establishment of packing design standards. 
    • Supports manufacturing section by guiding the actual packing operation through assembly and inspection. 
    • Operates interactive computer graphic systems as required.

    Qualifications:

    • College degree in Graphic Design (preferred), fine arts, design and visual communication or any technical discipline from a fully accredited college or university.
    • Experience or knowledge of industrial drafting and design for concepts and manufactured products e.g. cars, home appliances and toys.

    Preferred Additional Skills:

    • Practical use and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Work independently with little direction on large projects. Organization and task prioritization.
    • Position requires a minimum of 5 years background in the design of packaging for electronic parts.
    • 5 years experience using a CAD tool.
    • Associates degree or greater in Design.
    • Proven ability to evaluate manufacturing capability of packing material from subcontractors.
    • Proven ability to evaluate design capability of packing material subcontractors.
    • The individual must be a self-starter.
    • Knowledge of Government and Commercial standards concerning packaging and documentation is required.
    • Proven ability to work with Engineering, Purchasing, QA and Manufacturing.

    In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role is $55,000- $83,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. L3Harris also offers a variety of benefits, including relocation stipend, 401(k), EAP, and company-paid holidays. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements.
