INNIO Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Engineer, you need strong problem-solving abilities, expertise in product design and development, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, prototyping tools, and project management systems like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Jira is common. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability help Product Engineers collaborate across departments and respond to changing requirements. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving product innovation, ensuring manufacturability, and meeting customer and business needs efficiently.

What are some common challenges Product Engineers face when balancing technical requirements with user needs?

Product Engineers often encounter the challenge of reconciling technical constraints with user expectations. This means they must work closely with design, marketing, and user experience teams to ensure the final product is both feasible to manufacture and meets customer needs. Navigating trade-offs between cost, manufacturability, and performance is a regular part of the job. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial, as priorities can shift rapidly based on feedback or market changes.

What does a Product Engineer do?

A Product Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving products by collaborating with cross-functional teams such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance. They work on creating prototypes, testing products for functionality and safety, and refining designs based on feedback and data. Product Engineers also help ensure that products meet industry standards and customer requirements, often overseeing the manufacturing process and troubleshooting any issues that arise. Their role is crucial in bringing innovative and high-quality products to market efficiently.

What is the difference between Product Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectProduct EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, often in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial EngineeringBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentDesign, develop, and improve products; collaborate with cross-functional teamsDesign, analyze, and test mechanical systems and components
Industry UsageTechnology, manufacturing, consumer electronics, automotiveManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, robotics

Product Engineers focus on developing and improving products throughout their lifecycle, often working closely with design and manufacturing teams. Mechanical Engineers primarily design and analyze mechanical systems and components. While both roles require engineering degrees, Product Engineers tend to have a broader focus on product development and integration, whereas Mechanical Engineers concentrate on mechanical design and analysis.

With a track record of innovation, INNIO designs, manufactures and services high-performance power systems under its Jenbacher and Waukesha brands. The company delivers power for applications including data centers, microgrids, grid stabilization, industrial energy and gas compression.
INNIO operates a global installed base across approximately 100 countries as of December 31, 2025, supported by a resilient, high-margin services business that delivers long-term, recurring revenues across the full equipment lifecycle. As electricity demand accelerates-driven by AI, electrification and grid constraints-INNIO enables scalable, behind-the-meter power generation with high efficiency, fast start capability, strong transient performance and fuel flexibility, including hydrogen-ready solutions. INNIO employs over 5,000 people worldwide and is committed to moving energy forward.

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will be part of our Genset Development team. This position is responsible for leading projects and initiatives with broad scope and significant impact on the business, leveraging technical expertise in reciprocating engines. The role contributes to overall strategy and manages complex issues within INNIO as well as with customers and suppliers. This position requires an assertive Senior Engineer with strong communication and leadership skills, capable of coordinating complex, cross-functional engineering projects and driving efficient solutions while balancing technical requirements and strategic business goals.
This position will be based at our Houston, TX office.
Responsibilities:
• Identify technical product weaknesses at the generator set level across design, production, and customer operation, and drive issue resolution through all levels of the organization until critical KPIs are met.
• Act as the technical project lead for INNIO's scope of supply on multiple large and complex engine projects, focusing on identifying project needs and executing projects through to closure.
• Coordinate and document project-specific product specifications and subsystem definitions across all involved internal functions and external partners.
• Manage changes to project requirements in collaboration with Customers, Sales, Suppliers, Engineering teams, Service, Product Management, Sourcing, and other INNIO functions.
• Organize and lead regular project meetings, track action items, and drive resolution of technical challenges.
• Facilitate the application of new, non-established technical solutions based on project-specific requirements.
• Own project milestone tracking and ensure on-time delivery of project deliverables.
• Prepare and conduct internal project reviews in collaboration with PMO and PLM.
• Support Sourcing in localization projects and supply base initiatives by evaluating and validating alternative packaging suppliers, providing technical RFQ documents, and participating in alignment calls and supplier visits.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent education, with eight (8) or more years of relevant engine development experience
• Substantial experience in reciprocating engine mechanical development within the medium- to large-bore sector
• Proficiency in the latest engineering tools and methodologies relevant to product development, including but not limited to: RCA, DFMEA, Six Sigma, DMAIC, Fishbone, FTA, and Design for Reliability
• Hands-on experience across a broad range of engineering aspects such as design, analysis, validation and testing, production, and prototyping
• Commitment to sustainability by supporting initiatives that reduce life-cycle emissions and contribute to the development of low-carbon and circular products
• Ability to travel up to 75% of the working time spent at customer sites
• Valid driver's license and passport
• Legally authorized to work in the United States
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
• Strong leader leadership and communication skills to effectively manage and support a team of engineers and technical experts, as well as external suppliers. This includes fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
• Ability to influence others and support large, globally diverse teams towards common goals
• Strong ability in conflict management, expectation setting as well as say/do mentality
• Organizational skills required to manage large, integrated programs and teams
• Ability to engage effectively across all organizational levels within the US and Headquarter in Jenbach / Austria
