Gerdau is currently seeking a student for an Engineering Internship at our Whitby Metals Recycling location. 

The student must be currently enrolled and have completed at least two years of a university degree from a recognized accredited college or university in an Engineering related Discipline. Preferred education program BEng, Mechanical Engineering.  Internship beginning as soon as possible, extending 12 to 16 months.

During the program you will interact with team members from around the world. You will have the opportunity to learn on the job and work on challenging projects that will further your development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 The Engineering Intern Student will provide technical coordination and support in the operating and capital expense management processes for the department alongside the Engineering Department.  This position reports directly to the senior member of the engineering team for assignments.  The incumbent will take part in project evaluation, technical studies, oversight, and contribution to assigned responsibilities and entering project information in EPM and MS project software.

  • Develop and refine engineering procedures.
  • Process sample and data collection and interpretation.
  • Implement new technology.
  • Train and develop technical operations.
  • Conduct Technical Studies to support CAPEX investments.
  • Implement Best Practices.
  • Support process improvement projects where applicable.
  • Participate in the development of Annual Actions Plans.
  • Participate in Technical Committee benchmark.
  • Coordinate the implementation of approved projects on specified locations throughout Canada and US.
  • Interact with internal customers and external vendors to implement the project.
  • Conduct Technical Studies to support CAPEX investments.
  • Interact with internal customers and external vendors to implement the project.

The student will also assist and take part in the preparation and completion of blueprints using ACAD for additions, installations, and maintenance/repair purposes.  This job is in part responsible for preparing drawings and sketches for modifications of machinery and equipment, and layouts on various systems.  The incumbent will assist in checking and verifying specifications and drawings for accuracy on large projects that require design drawings needed in constructing the facility.

The Individual:

  • Student must have a high GPA 3.0 and above combined with practical knowledge and skills that will allow room for leadership potential, excellent communication skills and team work capabilities. 
  • Student must be currently enrolled and has completed at least two years of a university degree from a recognized accredited college or university in an Engineering related Discipline.  
  • Internship will be 12 to 16 months.
  • Must be legally authorized to work full-time in the country of hire without requiring current or future sponsorship for employment  
  • Student must have a valid Canadian passport and be willing to travel (if required)
  • The incumbent must possess good communication and problem solving skills have the ability to articulate ideas, detail oriented, and be comfortable dealing with associates at all levels within the organization.
  • AutoCAD and various other Engineering software knowledge is necessary.
  • Previous Project Management experience is a strong asset, as the main job function is project driven.
