ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Critical features of this job are described below. They may be subject to change at any time due to reasonable accommodation or other reasons.
Wastewater treatment - Monitors incoming water, performs treatment analysis, treats water with necessary chemicals to meet permit requirements, discharges to city sewage plant and monitors discharge. Includes monitoring chemical inventory, ordering new chemicals as needed, and repairing major and minor pumps and other treatment equipment. All must be performed in accordance with EPA and city permit requirements.
Hazardous waste - Checks hazardous waste storage areas for EPA compliance violations, corrects violations, combines waste into appropriate containers, ensures containers are properly closed and labeled, and gives feedback to logistics or production management personnel when violations are found.
Hazardous & special waste shipments - Coordinates and oversees shipments of waste solvents/inks/thinners, used oil, coolants, phosphate sludges, batteries, computers, mercury containing devices, and other special waste in accordance with EPA and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements.
Hazardous Materials Shipping - Makes determination of non-waste hazardous materials per the DOT definition and performs and coordinates proper shipping of these materials to meet regulatory requirements.
In-house recycling - Checks status of in-house recycling programs (paper, plastics, metals, etc), including checking storage areas and containers and responding to leadership complaints. Supervises shipments of recycled goods.
Monthly wastewater reports - Prepares monthly reports in accordance with City of Statesville requirements.
Medical waste - Verifies medical waste is properly prepared and manifested for off-site shipment and disposal.
Hazardous waste sampling - Conducts hazardous waste sampling per EPA requirements when necessary.
Eco Vision 2035 & ISO 14001 - Confirms waste being sent to landfill by performing dumpster dives and following landfill bound trucks, supports kaizen efforts to reduce waste and other costs and assists to improve formal environmental management system.
Training - Trains associates on proper environmental actions at department and team levels.
Other - Must have the ability to get along with co-workers and internal and external customers.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares monthly wastewater reports for management review and submittal to the City of Statesville wastewater treatment facility.
Hosts EPA and State of North Carolina Hazardous waste inspectors as needed, including city and state wastewater inspectors - normally 2-4 times per year.
Responds to chemical spills on the campus and contains, neutralizes, then removes and prepares materials for proper disposal.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Specific Skills: knowledge of EPA, OSHA and DOT rules, chemistry and mechanical maintenance (especially pumps, valves and hydraulics)
Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc.: State of North Carolina Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification (preferred), OSHA 40 hour training, DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping certification, IATA air shipping certification, RCRA hazardous waste training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Must have completed DOT hazardous materials shipping training, IATA Dangerous Goods shipping training, OSHA 40 hour training, hazardous waste annual refresher training and wastewater pretreatment and /or grade IV operator certifications.
Environmental or science associate degree is helpful.
Must have 2 years of environmental experience.
Associate must be able to successfully demonstrate that he or she can perform technical requirements such as chemical sampling and analysis, wastewater bench testing, chemical handling safety, hazardous waste identification and management and other technical environmental requirements.

Internal contacts may include associates at all levels from various departments, such as Safety & Health; many production supervisors, team leaders and associates; production engineers, Facilities Maintenance and some contractors. External contacts may include EPA, State of North Carolina Department of Environment Quality, City of Statesville, vendors, chemical suppliers, contractors and professional organization representatives.
