What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cyber Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cyber Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, network security, and cybersecurity principles, typically supported by a relevant degree and industry certifications like CISSP or CEH. Familiarity with security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and SIEM platforms is essential. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are vital for proactively identifying vulnerabilities, mitigating cyber threats, and ensuring organizational security.

What are some typical challenges a Cyber Engineer faces when working with cross-functional teams?

Cyber Engineers often collaborate with software developers, IT administrators, and business stakeholders to implement security measures. A common challenge is communicating technical risks and solutions to non-technical team members, ensuring that everyone understands the importance and impact of cybersecurity protocols. Additionally, aligning security requirements with project timelines and business goals can require negotiation and flexibility. Addressing these challenges effectively helps maintain robust security while supporting organizational objectives.

What is a Cyber Engineer?

A Cyber Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining secure computer systems and networks to protect an organization from cyber threats. They work on a variety of security measures, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption techniques, to safeguard data and infrastructure. Cyber Engineers also monitor systems for vulnerabilities, respond to security breaches, and ensure compliance with cybersecurity policies and regulations.

What is the difference between Cyber Engineer vs Network Security Specialist?

Job description

Position Overview
The Cyber Range Event Engineer is a key member of the Event Engineering Team (EET), responsible for designing, deploying, and managing realistic test environments that replicate operational IT systems and weapon platforms on the NCR range. This role is not a cybersecurity or red team position, it requires a strong foundation in systems engineering, infrastructure integration, and the ability to translate mission requirements into deployable systems across a wide range of test scenarios.
Key Responsibilities
  • Work with event sponsors and range users to define technical and operational objectives
  • Design and implement integrated test environments using traditional IT systems, tactical networks, weapon systems, and representative mission components
  • Lead the deployment of physical and virtualized systems (compute, network, storage, C2, sensors, etc.) that align with test objectives
  • Coordinate across engineering teams to ensure environment readiness and interoperability
  • Create environment design documents, deployment plans, and technical briefings for stakeholders
  • Support live event execution by managing system configuration, troubleshooting, and real-time adjustments
  • Capture environment lessons learned to drive repeatability and improvement

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, or related discipline
  • 8+ years of experience in systems integration, IT infrastructure engineering, or testbed/environment design
  • Strong understanding of enterprise IT systems (Windows, Linux, AD, Exchange, DNS, databases, etc.)
  • Experience designing and deploying mission-representative networks (e.g., LAN/WAN, VPN, tactical radios, firewalls, routers, switches)
  • Proficiency with virtualization platforms (VMware, ESXi, Hyper-V, KVM)
  • Ability to infer test requirements and translate them into actionable infrastructure plans
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
Desired Skills
  • Experience supporting DoD test events or mission rehearsals
  • Familiarity with LVC (Live, Virtual, Constructive) environments or simulation integration
  • Knowledge of GOTS/COTS systems and their use in operational mission scenarios
  • Familiarity with RMF or system hardening (but not the primary focus of this role)
  • Exposure to cyber range infrastructure, but with a focus on deployment rather than cyber TTPs
  • Prior experience supporting NCR or other military range environments
  • Experience integrating weapon systems or MIL-STD interfaces

Travel Requirements
  • Minimal travel (10%)
