This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we're developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin's mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies.

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and experienced Sr Principal Software Engineer to lead the technical strategy for Blue Origin's Software Development organization. This dynamic org is responsible for key software applications within Blue's engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, test, and refurb organizations and much more. These systems are used daily by thousands of users and are essential to our ambitious goals. Join us as a leader in one of Blue's fastest growing organizations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Technical owner of software strategy across multiple domains.
  • Directly interface with customers to solve their technical challenges
  • Present complex technical strategies to senior leadership, including Senior Vice Presidents and potentially the CEO.
  • Collaborate with Principal Engineers and software development leaders to architect, design, and execute our ambitious technical roadmap.
  • Identify and implement novel applications of AI to enhance user experiences and software development efficiency.
  • Lead AI best practices for Software development establishing and continuing to develop best practices for harness engineering allowing AI agents to work at scale in production
  • Promote software best practices across the entire organization including CI/CD, modular architectures, comprehensive testing, scalable systems, etc.
  • Champion operational excellence by reducing technical debt, maintaining low ticket counts, ensuring high availability, minimizing mean time to recovery, and implementing extensive monitoring and alarms.
  • Lead technical design reviews across the organization building repeatable processes and mechanisms to scale design and delivery of software.
  • Develops technical influence as an internal and industry subject-matter expert, as exemplified by IP invention, internal or external publications, and leadership roles .
  • Sets the standards for and evaluates the technical judgmentof their Job Familyto review methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Drives operational excellence initiatives across the company, including areas where the company's processes or technology strategy are stifling innovation or slowing the pace of delivery.
  • Extensively mentor software developers up to the Principal SDE level. This role does not have any direct reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Has a record of technical decisions that held up at scale over time.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 15+ years of experience writing and deploying software in production environments.
  • 7+ years of experience developing distributed backend systems and utilizing cloud services such as AWS.
  • Proven ability to solve complex, ambiguous problems in unfamiliar domains.
  • Proven ability to proactively identify problems that no one has yet identifiedwhere a path to the optimal solution is not clear.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience presenting to senior leadership, at or above the Vice President level.
  • Proven record of proactively identifying, pursuing and resolving org-wide challenges, without direction from your direct manager
  • Experience mentoring software engineers, including Principal Engineers strong passion for aerospace and Blue Origin's mission.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in design engineering manufacturing, supply chain, test and flight software and/or aerospace.

  • Experience researching and incorporating modern AI/ML tools


Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $264,103.00 - $369,743.85

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
