Job description

Job Title: Machine Operator

Job Description

The Machine Operator sets up and operates equipment that drills, cuts, and bends steel in a large structural steel fabrication shop. This role focuses on safe and precise machine operation, accurate measurement, and quality control to ensure all workpieces meet required specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Operate machines that drill, cut, and bend steel in a production environment.
  • Measure dimensions of completed products and workpieces using tape measures and other tools to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints to determine measurements, cutting requirements, and fabrication details.
  • Install mechanical parts and components on equipment as needed for proper machine setup and operation.
  • Check and ensure proper machine operation, including placement of materials, lubrication, and overall equipment functionality.
  • Monitor machine movement, commands, and production runs, making adjustments to settings to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Set up machines for production, including loading materials, aligning workpieces, and verifying tooling and fixtures.
  • Use basic hand and power tools safely to support fabrication, adjustments, and maintenance activities related to machine operation.
  • Maintain a clean and organized production area, including cleaning production machines and surrounding workspaces.
  • Follow all safety guidelines when working around heavy structural steel beams, trusses, and other large fabricated components.
  • Perform general production and machine operating tasks in an industrial and manufacturing setting as required.
  • Handle and move materials, including lifting up to 50 lbs, and standing for extended periods throughout the shift.

Essential Skills

  • Experience operating machines in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure in 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16 inch increments.
  • Proficiency in blueprint reading for fabrication and production work.
  • Back ground working with steel or in a steel fabrication environment.
  • Experience in CNC or general machine operation and production work.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 lbs safely and repeatedly.
  • Ability to stand for up to 8 hours during the shift.
  • Comfort working in a noisy, dusty fabrication shop with visual hazards, while following safety protocols.

Work Environment

Work takes place in a large structural steel fabrication shop that produces architectural parts for heavy beams and trusses used to support buildings. The environment can be dusty and noisy, with visual hazards typical of a busy industrial facility, and requires adherence to safety procedures. The role is on second shift, typically from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, and involves standing for most of the shift and handling heavy steel components and materials.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bernalillo, NM.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr.
