Job description


Position Summary:
The Custodial Technician is part of Vanderbilt University Maintenance and Operations (VUMO) and is an individual contributor responsible for performing specialized housekeeping and cleaning duties in various buildings across the Vanderbilt University campus. This position is reports directly to the Housekeeping Supervisor and works in partnership with all departments across the university.
VUMO provides facilities support for all construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University Central space and facilities; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet of academic, administrative, residential, and recreational space; grounds care for 330 acres that are a registered arboretum; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and the Medical Center.
The Custodial Technician role is assigned to perform higher level and more specialized custodial duties throughout the Vanderbilt University campus.
Key Functions and Expected Performance:
  • Perform special assignments independently
  • Spot/wet mop floors
  • Sweep/dust mop/vacuum floors
  • Operate upright and backpack vacuum
  • Spot clean carpeted surfaces
  • High/low dusting
  • Wipe/clean both horizontal and vertical surfaces
  • Collect and transport trash/waste to central location
  • Collect recycling (in "assist"buildings") and transport to central location in building
  • Refill dispensers
  • Clean appliances (when requested)
  • Clean plumbing fixtures
  • Clean & service waterless urinals
  • Dispense cleaning chemicals from J-fill station
  • Move and arrange furniture
  • Maintain individual custodial closet supplies inventory and request supplies and equipment as needed
  • Identify building minor maintenance problems and annotate on the Building Routine Inspection form
  • Notify supervisor when maintenance repairs are needed
  • Turn on and off lights, and assigned equipment
  • Unlock/lock assigned spaces
  • Complete labor data entry sheet as required
  • Respond to custodial emergency calls in assigned buildings
  • Perform custodial duties in support of events
  • Snow removal from entrances of assigned building
  • Refinish hard surface flooring
  • Operate carpet extractors, buffers, pressure washers
  • Operate walk behind equipment used for routine floor cleaning
  • Operate and perform operator maintenance level to vehicle, if one assigned for daily duties
  • Other duties related to classification

Supervisory Relationships:
This position does not have supervisory responsibility, this position reports administratively and functionally to the Housekeeping Supervisor.
Education and Certifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Valid Driver License is required; must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Vanderbilt University engages a third party to provide up-to-date notifications regarding negative changes to motor vehicle records.
  • Previous custodial/housekeeping experience is required.
  • Previous experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Customer Service driven attitude is required.
  • Previous experience refinishing floors and using floor care equipment is required
  • Push, pull, lift, and carry at least 50 pounds.
