Job description

Opportunity InformationProgram Director: Anesthesiology ResidencySummary

The Program Director (PD) directs all operations of the Sutter Health Anesthesiology Residency Program at Memorial Medical Center Modesto and clinical patient care provided by residents and faculty. The PD develops and leads strategic plans for high-quality resident recruitment, training, and retention. The PD provides residents with a superb training experience while meeting ABIM, ACGME, and Sutter Health institutional standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESProgram Leadership
  • Plans, organizes, leads, and develops program strategies, goals, and operations. Meets ABIM, ACP, ACGME, The Joint Commission, and other required regulatory standards.
  • Supervises faculty, residents, and administrative staff in matters of recruitment, performance evaluation, compensation, disciplinary action, and development.
  • Appoints faculty to teaching roles within the residency program, oversees the quality of education they provide, and removes them from these roles if they are unable to meet the standards of the program.
  • Responsible for oversight of resident recruitment including application review, interview process, and submission of rank order list to the National Resident Match Program (NRMP).
  • Provides active leadership and effective advocacy for all program interests in interactions with key stakeholder groups within Sutter Health.
  • Provides planning, monitoring, and accountability for all fiscal affairs of the program including: Operating budget, Foundation and grant support, Medicare funding for graduate medical education, Implementation of program policies on travel and other benefits consistent with both contractual and Sutter Health institutional requirements.
  • Demonstrates leadership in internal medicine at local, regional, and national levels, which builds a positive reputation for the Sutter Health Anesthesiology Residency Program.
  • Chairs and serves on appropriate committees (i.e., GMEC, CCC, PEC, etc.).
New Program Development and Accreditation

All efforts will be conducted in collaboration with and supported by the Sutter Health central GME office including Manager of Accreditation and the DIO.

  • Lead all efforts to design and implement a new Anesthesiology Residency Program at Memorial Medical Center Modesto.
  • Develop program structure, curriculum, and policies in alignment with ACGME requirements for Anesthesiology.
  • Prepare and submit all documentation required for ACGME Initial Accreditation.
  • Ensure compliance with ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements throughout the accreditation process.
  • Establish systems for continuous quality improvement to meet ongoing standards for ACGME Continued Accreditation.
  • Coordinate with Memorial Medical Center Modesto leadership, Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), and other stakeholders to secure resources and support for program launch.
  • Develop faculty recruitment and development plans to meet ACGME faculty qualifications and scholarly activity requirements.
  • Create and implement resident recruitment strategies for the inaugural class, including NRMP participation.
  • Monitor and maintain program compliance with all reporting requirements and milestones as defined by ACGME and ABIM.
  • Serve as primary liaison with ACGME site visitors and reviewers during initial and subsequent accreditation visits.
Teaching and Mentorship
  • Precepts Residents (and Medical Students) in Anesthesiology, which can include inpatient (Memorial Medical Center Modesto), intensive care, and/or outpatient (clinic) settings.
  • Serves as a role model for residents.
  • Participates and leads quality improvement and patient safety activities.
  • Oversees the overall curriculum of the residency program.
  • Actively participates in educational activities of the Sutter Health Anesthesiology Residency Program. Specifics depend on professional qualifications. Regardless of area of special expertise, regular participation in clinical teaching in all sites: Morning report and Memorial Medical Center Modesto teaching rounds, Resident and faculty didactic conferences, Faculty development.
  • Oversees remediation and coaching of struggling residents along with advisors and faculty.
ABA Accreditation Requirements

The Program Director must ensure compliance with ACGME Anesthesiology Program Requirements and ABA standards, including maintaining ACGME accreditation, supporting resident exam preparation such as the ITE and Basic exam, and ensuring the program meets ABA board certification training criteria.

Clinical Care
  • Provides direct patient care, which can include outpatient, inpatient, and intensive care settings.
  • Shares in appropriate clinic, hospital and/or call coverage duties and clinical supervision.
Other General Duties
  • Other duties and responsibilities as designated.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Anesthesiology Residents
  • Core Faculty in conjunction with Site Medical Director
  • Administrative staff in conjunction with GME Manager
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 3 years of documented educational and administrative experience in medical education.
  • Documented educational and administrative experience acceptable to the ACGME Anesthesiology Review Committee.
  • Actively involved in clinical care of patients.
  • Knowledge of health care delivery and administration, as well as legal and ethical issues related to health care.
  • Ability to work with a team approach to management. Ability to work as a member of a team to solicit input from other affected programs or individuals, communicate pertinent information to other team members, and support team decisions.
  • Ability to be persuasive and diplomatic in encouraging teamwork and cooperation in the pursuit of excellence in service.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and exercise sound and responsible judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal. Ability to establish constructive working relationships with all levels of management and employees in a staff of varied and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent, and equitable manner.
  • Ability to supervise others and delegate effectively.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to effectively represent the program's interests in the community; maintaining effective working relationships among public, private, and professional groups.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Current California medical license and Board Certification in Anesthesiology.
  • As required for appropriate clinical privileges.
