Job description

Position Summary

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) Urban Green Crew Program provides young adults with paid, hands-on experience in conservation, environmental stewardship, and workforce development. Crew members work together to improve and protect Atlanta's parks, trails, forests, and green spaces while developing valuable workplace skills that prepare them for future careers. Participants will complete meaningful conservation projects including trail maintenance, habitat restoration, invasive species removal, litter abatement, urban forestry, landscaping, and park improvements throughout the Metro Atlanta area. Projects are completed in partnership with local parks, nonprofit organizations, schools, municipalities, and community organizations. Throughout the program, crew members will strengthen communication, teamwork, professionalism, leadership, and problem-solving skills while gaining exposure to careers in conservation, environmental science, parks and recreation, forestry, and other natural resource fields. This program is ideal for young adults who enjoy working outdoors, making a positive impact in their community, and developing skills that can lead to future educational and employment opportunities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete hands-on conservation projects throughout Metro Atlanta
  • Perform trail construction and maintenance
  • Remove invasive plant species
  • Plant trees, native plants, and vegetation
  • Assist with habitat restoration projects
  • Collect litter and beautify public green spaces
  • Use hand tools safely under staff supervision
  • Work collaboratively as part of a conservation crew
  • Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Participate in environmental education and workforce development activities
  • Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and a positive attitude
  • Represent the Student Conservation Association positively while working with community partners

Marginal Duties

Crew Members may occasionally assist with organizing tools and equipment, maintaining clean worksites and vehicles, completing required program documentation (including timesheets and attendance records), participating in career readiness and environmental education activities, supporting community outreach events, and performing other related duties as assigned to support the success of the program.

Required Qualifications

  • Be a young adult (18 or older)
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Be able to perform physical outdoor work for up to 8 hours each day
  • Be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
  • Be willing to work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Successfully complete all required SCA onboarding and background check requirements
  • Be dependable, respectful, and willing to learn
  • Have reliable transportation to and from the designated daily meeting location

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in conservation, environmental science, or outdoor work
  • Previous volunteer or work experience is helpful but not required
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills
  • Commitment to personal and professional growth
