What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Game Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, C#, or Java), a solid understanding of computer graphics, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, version control systems, and sometimes certifications in these platforms are commonly required. Creative problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this field. These abilities are crucial for building engaging, technically robust games and collaborating successfully within multidisciplinary development teams.

What are some common challenges game developers face when working on large team projects?

Game developers working on large team projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple disciplines (programming, art, design, audio), ensuring clear communication, and managing dependencies between different parts of the game. Balancing creative vision with technical constraints and deadlines can also be demanding. Adapting to shifting priorities and integrating feedback from playtesting are key aspects of the collaborative process, making strong teamwork and flexibility essential in this role.

What does a game developer do?

A game developer is responsible for designing, creating, and programming video games for computers, consoles, or mobile devices. Their work involves coding, testing, and debugging game software, as well as collaborating with artists, designers, and other team members to bring a game concept to life. Game developers may specialize in areas like gameplay programming, graphics, or artificial intelligence, and often use game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine to build their projects.

What is the difference between Game Developer vs Game Designer?

Role: Game Developer / Software Engineer (Gacha Role-Playing Games)

Location: Toronto, ON, M5C 1P1

Type: Full-Time, On-Site

About Us: Tier 9 Game Studios is a fast-paced mobile games company focused on creating industry-changing mobile role-playing games. Our live-service game is Auto Battles Online but we're actively developing a new game called Auto Battles World, an ambitious Gacha Idle RPG with a 2D open world. We're on the lookout for a seasoned and talented Game Developer to join our team and help us build exciting new features and content.

Role Overview: As a Game Developer at Tier 9 Game Studios, you will play a key role in designing, implementing, and optimizing game mechanics, features, and systems. The nature of your job is highly technical but at times you might assist in other areas of development as well.

Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership over assigned work from start to finish.
  • Designing and implementing new systems to achieve project goals.
  • Learning and working with existing systems.
  • Ensuring that code meets quality and performance standards for release.
  • Identifying and addressing issues or areas of improvement proactively
  • Supporting and helping teammates when necessary.
  • Actively adopting new technologies and processes - even when the transition is a bit uncomfortable

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in C# and/or Java with a commitment to software engineering principles and code quality. OOP expertise is a must and ECS experience is a bonus, as part of our new game is built with this architecture pattern!
  • Experience as a player of online role-playing games (Maplestory, Idleon, Runescape, Path of Exile, World of Warcraft, AFK Arena, Hero Wars, Idle Heroes. etc.)
  • Experience in Unity or other similar game engine.
  • Experience with A.I. coding, including the use of Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and other top tools.
  • Ability to rapidly prototype and polish to high standards.
  • Great communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Strong debugging, optimization, and testing skills.
  • Proactive and independently motivated.
  • Time flexibility for fixing urgent issues in production, although we try to avoid this where possible.
  • Positive attitude and passion for creating great mobile games!

Benefits:

  • We don't require native fluency in English, only a level of proficiency sufficient for engineering and game design discussions. We're willing to accommodate for this!
  • Collaborative and creative work environment. We operate closely together and treat everyone with respect.
  • Opportunity for career advancement and skill development. We prioritize staying on the cutting edge of emerging technologies in order to constantly expand our own capabilities.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and paramedical benefits. This includes massage therapists, physiotherapists, counsellors and more!
  • Regular team meals and outings plus an abundance of in-office snacks, on the house!
  • Extremely fun and engaging work. See your completed features being enjoyed by players within weeks or even days!

If you have a passion for online role-playing games and the expertise to create captivating worlds, we want to hear from you! Join us in crafting games that leave a lasting impression on players and re-define the genre.

Application Process: To apply, please submit your resume and include links to past projects if applicable.
