About the Role
The primary functions of the Panel Van Driver position are to pick-up and deliver local freight using delivery vans, small trucks, and the operation of various pieces of moving/loading equipment and machinery, while providing good customer service in a professional, safe, and efficient manner.
Supervision/Management:
  • Position is not Supervisory in nature

What you'll do:
  • Pick-up and delivery of local freight using a van or small truck
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of vehicles, trailers or containers as needed
  • Assist in moving freight within yard or warehouse using appropriate equipment as needed
  • Communicate with Dispatch for routes and changes to assigned routes
  • Verify inventory loads against manifests and process all other freight related paperwork
  • Collect payment from customers with Cash On Delivery invoices
  • Assist customers via over phone and face-to-face regarding freight pick-up and delivery in a polite and professional manner
  • Inspect and maintain vehicle such as gas, oil, coolant, tires, lights, and brakes to ensure proper working condition; perform minor vehicle maintenance, emergency repairs and cleaning
  • Consistently adhere to all of Span/MSTS Safety and Fit for Duty policies and procedures
  • Occasionally assist with warehouse cleanup as needed
  • Assist coworkers and other departments as needed
  • Follow all Department of Transportation regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Communication/Customer Contact:
  • Communication skills are necessary as the position interacts with customers, vendors, contractors, and/or suppliers. Communication is rarely about confidential information.

  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • Ability to drive a variety of vehicles in a variety of weather conditions.

  • Must exercise good judgment, decision-making, and focus.
  • Ability to use radio and telephone.
  • Must be conscientious and aware of safety procedures and issues.
  • Ability to prioritize.
  • Knowledge of good lifting techniques.

  • High School diploma (or equivalent) required
  • Minimum of six months of driving experience
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the necessary qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position

Certifications/Licenses:
  • Valid class D Driver's license for a minimum of 1 year
  • Clean driving record
  • Valid Medical Card
  • Forklift Certification

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to push or pull heavy loads (up to 200 pounds) with a 2000-pound pallet jack.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit in a vehicle for long stretches of time.
  • Must be able to operate all equipment in a vehicle, which may include grasping, climbing, bending, handling, reaching, fingering, feeling/touching and repetitive motions of the hands and feet.

Work Environment:
  • Work is either performed in a warehouse environment, outside in the elements, in a company vehicle or at a customer site. Exposure to exhaust fumes is likely. Overtime may be mandatory, and a Sunday rotation may be a regular part of the schedule. Conditions may also include exposure to environmental noise.

Eligibility and Selection Process:
  • Any warehouseman that has been accident and incident free in the last 6 months is eligible to apply to be part of the program. Once the application has been submitted the candidate will need to have their driving record approved by the safety department or equivalent entity. Once approved the candidate will be added to the driver DOT random drug testing pool as well as the panel van alternate list. When an opening to operate the panel van arises the alternate list will be utilized. To keep the process fair each opening will be filled by the next name on the list until all names on the list are used and then started from the top again. The $2.00 panel van stipend will only apply for the hours in which the panel van is operated.
