POSITION SUMMARY:

Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a Lab Tester to support the Mandan Refinerylocated in North Dakota. The Lab Tester is considered an essential and active member that supports the front-line Refinery teams. The Lab Tester has a primary objective to perform lab operations in a safe, environmentally sound, and reliable manner.

This objective is accomplished through the acquirement of a wide variety of Lab technical skills. In addition, the establishment of proactive and planned work practices, adherence to established procedures, the development of the ability to anticipate lab problems in advance, the capability to troubleshoot or respond to problems quickly, and the adoption of a culture of continuous improvement.

The Lab runs on a 24-hour schedule and will require rotating 12 hour shift work. This position is located in Mandan, ND and reports to the Laboratory Supervisor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Utilizes the employee evaluation process and other applicable KPI measures to enhance skills and improve job performances.
  • Satisfactorily completes the Lab, regulatory and refinery training requirements.
  • Develops and maintains necessary capabilities to assure the optimal operation and reliability of assigned Lab duties.
  • Supports Lab safety, environmental, and business plans in alignment with the refinery strategy.
  • Assists with TAR as required during unit TAR's.
  • Communicates irregular lab analysis to Refinery supervision.
  • Diagnoses and corrects equipment problems and/or communicates need for maintenance work orders.
  • Performs necessary functions as required during and after emergency situations.
  • Communicates lab data to insure unit consistency and support unit performance testing.
  • Works within established guidelines to ensure best practices are being implemented.
  • Responsible for compliance with all pertinent regulations, including documentation and reporting of any variances to Refinery supervision.
  • Assists lab supervision in compliance with all regulatory activities.
  • Demonstrate Lab skill and hardware knowledge.
  • Coordination and execution of preventive and predictive maintenance/operations to improve lab equipment reliability.
  • Provide lab data to ensure products meet applicable specifications.
  • Day to day troubleshooting, monitoring and data analysis.
  • Day to day Lab duties.
  • Provision of fast, reliable Lab services as needed by the refinery to implement the refinery's economics and scheduling plan as required.
  • Assistance in TAR execution as required.
  • Regular equipment performance monitoring.
  • Assuring quality Lab operation and utilization.
  • Adherence to Lab safety and environmental performance and standards.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related science field with a minimum of 4 college level courses in Chemistry and 2 Chemistry labs required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Experience in QC/production laboratory in petroleum refining or petrochemical industry preferred.
  • Experience with gas chromatography and wet chemistry desired as well as Microsoft Office applications and LIMS.

SKILLS:

  • Understanding of SQC desired.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong mechanical aptitude, organizational skills, verbal, and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work efficiently and safely alone as well as part of a team.
  • Ability tophysically perform all duties required which may involve (among others): bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying loads up to 50 lbs.

Pay and Benefits:

Employees with laboratory work experience who are qualified can start at $39.44 - $45.73. The maximum rate for the position is $54.19 with demonstrated qualification/proficiency after being hired. Annual increases are scheduled.
