Pathologists' Assistant (Contract) – Carbondale, Illinois

Position Title: Pathologists' Assistant
Specialty: Medical Laboratory – Pathology Assistant
Location: Carbondale, Illinois
Facility: Memorial Hospital of Carbondale (MHC)
Assignment Length: 13 Weeks
Start Date: March 16, 2026
Schedule: Day Shift, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM
Call Requirement: None
Employment Type: Contract

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Pathologists' Assistant to join a hospital-based pathology team in Carbondale, Illinois. This role is responsible for assisting pathologists with the gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens, preparing tissues for laboratory testing, and supporting diagnostic processes through accurate documentation and specimen management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform procedures within the scope of practice under the supervision of a pathologist.

  • Assist with the gross description and dissection of surgical tissue specimens.

  • Prepare and submit specimens for histological and other laboratory testing.

  • Review and summarize patient medical histories to support pathology evaluations.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and specimen tracking.

  • Collaborate effectively with pathologists, laboratory personnel, physicians, and hospital staff.

  • Adhere to organizational standards of quality, safety, integrity, accountability, and patient-centered care.

QualificationsEducation

  • Master's Degree in Health Science, Pathology, or a related field.

Certifications

  • Current ASCP Certification required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of Pathologists' Assistant experience preferred.

  • At least 1 year of experience in a healthcare or laboratory setting.

Licensure

  • Active state license required, if applicable.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent hand dexterity and specimen handling.

  • Ability to intermittently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to stand and work in a laboratory environment for extended periods.

  • EMR System: Epic

  • No holiday coverage required.

  • No on-call responsibilities.

  • One position available.
