What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), are commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating ideas into workable designs. These abilities ensure innovative, efficient, and manufacturable solutions that meet both technical and client requirements.

How does a Design Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Design Engineers regularly work alongside teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and product management to ensure that designs are both innovative and feasible for production. Collaboration often involves participating in cross-functional meetings, reviewing prototypes, and incorporating feedback from various stakeholders. This teamwork is essential to address technical and practical challenges early in the design process, which ultimately helps in delivering a successful product to market. Strong communication and adaptability are key skills for thriving in this collaborative environment.

Description

Keystone RV is looking for a detail-oriented Bill of Material (BOM) Writer / Costing Specialist who enjoys working with data, solving problems, and getting "hands-on" on the production floor.

This role blends office work with time in the production environment. You'll build and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), support cost tracking through month-end reporting analytics, and play a key role in ensuring cost and product data are accurate, consistent, and reflective of what's actually happening on the production line.

You'll work in a casual, team-focused manufacturing environment where people pitch in, communicate openly, and take pride in building quality products.

What You'll Do

  • Create and maintain BOMs for Travel Trailer and 5th Wheel RVs
  • Update BOMs based on Product Change Notices (PCNs)
  • Collaborate with sales, engineering, and production as part of the product team, providing cost data and estimates to support development decisions
  • Spend time on the production floor checking materials, components, and builds
  • Research & reconcile differences between cost expectations, BOMs, actual builds
  • Help keep product data clean, accurate, and up to date

Who We're Looking For

  • Detail-oriented and comfortable working with numbers and data
  • Ability to read a tape measure and perform unit of measure conversions
  • Excel skills (formulas & formatting are a must; analytic tools are a plus)
  • Comfortable working in both an office and a manufacturing environment
  • Strong communicator and team player
  • Organized, reliable, and willing to learn

Why This Role?

  • You'll see the full picture-from data in the system to the product being built
  • No two days are exactly the same
  • Your work directly impacts production accuracy and cost decisions
  • You'll learn both manufacturing and financial sides of business

Experience Desired

  • Manufacturing, RV, automotive, or similar environments
  • Background in product costing and/or accounting
  • College coursework in Accounting, Finance, Business, Engineering, or related field
  • Experience with ERP systems (like Microsoft Dynamics AX)

Work Environment

  • Split between office and production floor
  • Casual, hands-on manufacturing setting
  • Collaborative team where people help each other get things done
