Overview:

This Operations Geologist role is responsible for the planning and execution of ExxonMobil Exploration, Appraisal, and Development drill-wells. To accomplish this, the Operations Geologist must be competent in well planning and surveillance, integrated pressure prediction, and site investigation; understanding key deliverables such as a tophole prognosis, pore-pressure prediction, and well design. Key to the successful drilling of a well is close communication with the Business Unit (Geoscience, Reservoir Engineers), Petrophysicist, and Wells Engineers throughout the design and execution phases of the project, hence the Operations Geologist must be a good communicator, integrator and be highly organized to effectively change tact as conditions dictate. Evaluating multiple scenarios and ensuring close communication between all parties involved whilst managing expectations to ensure a safe, timely and economic completion of the drilling program meeting all geologic and operational objectives.

Work Schedule and Scope: The Operations Geologist will typically work a 40 hour/week schedule. The primary location will be at the ExxonMobil Houston Campus. Infrequent trips to a rig location (onshore or offshore) may be required. Working outside normal business hours to include weekends and public holidays may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate safety leadership and uphold ExxonMobil’s safety culture ensuring No Spills and the Nobody Gets Hurt, both in the office and if required, on the rig site.
  • Strong understanding of integrated pore pressure prediction and pressure surveillance
  • Strong understanding of site investigation including shallow drilling hazards evaluation (tophole prognosis) and riserless drilling geohazards
  • Well planning and surveillance (may include but not limited to):
  • Coordinate with the Wells organization and the project Petrophysicist in the contract technical evaluation for MWD/LWD, Wireline, and Mud Logging services (Procurement & Tendering)
  • Evaluate technical services and compile cost estimates for Wellsite Geology, Wellsite Biostratigraphy, Core Handling/Preservation and Analysis, and wellsite data management services as needed
  • Compile and document Well Objectives, Formation Evaluation plan, operations & communication protocols, and data/sample distribution into a Geological Program
  • Compile well and evaluation plan information in support of Company regulatory groups (Regulatory)
  • Participate/lead regular coordination and planning meetings with the Wells and Geoscience Teams
  • Facilitate and communicate with Wells Engineers and project Geologists to produce a well plan and casing design which will enable complete evaluation of geologic objectives whilst maintaining an economic and cost-effective solution
  • Design and establishment of casing seat and TD selection protocols, coring and formation evaluation programs.
  • Supervision, logistical and technical support of Wellsite Geologic personnel (Wellsite Geologists, Service Company personnel) to gather complete, high quality geologic data sets as specified.
  • QC and local loading, storage, and archival of all relevant electronic and physical data using systematic file naming and organization.
  • Capture lessons learned for future operational improvements
  • Assist, if necessary, in wellsite-based activities, including selection of casing seats, Geosteering (using Azimuthal Ultra Deep Resistivity), and supervision of conventional coring and wireline logging programs.
  • Review and analysis of geologic evaluation programs and service company performance on a well-by-well or monthly/quarterly basis to identify and address areas with room for improvement.
  • Compile and distribute final well reports, logs, and supporting documents to all parties in a timely fashion.
  • Presenting technical work to Subsurface and Wells teams including but not limited to TD protocol reviews, pre-spud meetings and after-action reviews (AAR).

Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in Geology from a recognized institution
  • Experience as an Operations Geologist
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English, have good organizational and coordination skills, and be able to work well with others
  • Flexible to work outside 8am-5pm to provide 24 hours Ops Geo coverage during drilling and logging operations if necessary including weekends and public holidays.
  • Onshore and Offshore experience including platform/deviated well drilling with associated technologies (e.g., LWD, WL).
  • Must be in good physical condition and shall comply with all project health and safety requirements (including any rig or country-specific certifications required to work offshore).
  • May be required: Have successfully passed a recognized (OPITO) course in Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET), Sea Survival, and H2S within the previous two years. Certifications must be current and not due to expire for the anticipated duration of the project.
  • Experience with mud logging; cuttings description; real-time image logs; and correlating them to determine lithology and well path.
  • Experience with basic FE interpretation for identifying rock type, fluid type, borehole conditions, etc.
  • Experience utilizing azimuthal ultra-deep resistivity (AUDR) for geosteering deepwater highly directional/deviated wells
  • Experience with managed pressure drilling (MPD) practices and their impact on geologic data collection.
  • Experience with production drilling environments and challenges, i.e. depleted sand, swept compartments, wellbore stability, fluid type uncertainty, etc.
  • Experience with directional drilling, well planning, depth control measurements; and understanding of BHA's (Bottom Hole Assembly).
  • Experience with conventional coring operations.
  • Experience of working in integrated asset team environment.
  • Experience in applying structural geology concepts and methods to assess compartmentalization/communication.
  • Experience of having worked with geologic modelers to incorporate maps and their interpretations into 3D geologic models.
