Job description

Position Summary
The Information Systems Technician provides technical support and administration for the division's student, employee, and financial information systems. This position is responsible for substitute scheduling systems, employee leave tracking and reporting, school attendance reporting coordination, Teacher Access Center and Home Access Center support, hybrid retirement benefit administration, and various school staff technical support to ensure the efficient operation of administrative and instructional systems across the division.
The Information Systems Technician serves as a liaison between schools, departments, software vendors, and the Technology Department while maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and security of sensitive student and employee information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma required
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
  • Experience supporting enterprise software applications preferred
  • Experience working in a K-12 educational environment preferred
  • Valid Virginia driver's license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
  • Knowledge of student information systems (PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, etc.) preferred
  • Knowledge of financial and human resource management software
  • Microsoft 365 applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint
  • Experience with SQL databases, reporting tools, and data analysis preferred
  • Strong understanding of user account management and role-based security
  • Understanding of cybersecurity best practices
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to learn new software systems quickly
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Information Systems Technician shall:
Information Systems
  • Provide technical support for the division's student information system, financial system, human resources/payroll system, and other enterprise applications.
  • Create, modify, and maintain user accounts, permissions, and security roles.
  • Assist with software implementation, upgrades, testing, and deployment.
  • Maintain system documentation, standard operating procedures, and user guides.
  • Create and modify reporting for annual financial audit
  • Process new fiscal year tasks and close previous fiscal year.
  • Coordinate with software vendors to resolve technical issues.
  • Monitor system functionality and recommend improvements.
Data Management
  • Assist with maintaining accurate student, employee, and financial data.
  • Generate reports for schools, departments, state reporting, and division leadership.
  • Verify data accuracy and assist with resolving data discrepancies.
  • Support Virginia Department of Education reporting requirements.
  • Assist with state and federal reporting processes.
  • Support data backup and recovery procedures.
Technical Support
  • Provide help desk support to school and central office personnel.
  • Troubleshoot application, printing, login, and connectivity issues.
  • Provide one-on-one and group training for users.
  • Support new employee onboarding related to technology systems.
  • Assist schools during beginning and end-of-year processing.
Cybersecurity & Compliance
  • Follow cybersecurity standards and division security procedures.
  • Assist with user security awareness initiatives.
  • Protect confidential student and employee information in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA (where applicable), and applicable Virginia laws.
Collaboration
  • Work collaboratively with Human Resource staff and school personnel.
  • Assist with software integrations between multiple platforms.
  • Participate in technology projects and system implementations.
  • Coordinate employee disability and leave requests with Human Resources Department
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all employees.
Other Duties
  • Attend professional development and required training.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all records.
  • Assist Human Resources concerning employee leave and documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Technology and Innovation or Superintendent/designee.
