Job description

Position Overview:

The Director of Engineering, Shop Technology is responsible for building, delivering, and scaling custom Application Development solutions and digital commerce experiences for Dutch Bros employees and customers. This critical role on the Technology leadership team ensures technical delivery and system reliability according to industry best practices. They will develop App Dev and DevOps objectives and a vision that aligns with overall company goals while driving and scaling technology innovation across the enterprise.

The position works closely with Product leaders and Principal Engineers to produce high-quality, highly reliable, and secure solutions. They lead a team of high-performing individuals and foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement, managing a talented engineering team that delivers exceptional software products.


Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in Application Development, including application architecture, information modeling, data governance, software engineering, and system integration.

  • 6+ years of people management experience, including at least 2+ years managing people leaders.

  • 5+ years of experience working with and managing SaaS partners and leveraging external vendors for engineering resource augmentation.

  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools, Generative AI platforms, and intelligent automation technologies to improve software delivery, engineering productivity, code quality, testing, and operational efficiency. Understanding of AI architecture patterns, model integrations, prompt engineering, security considerations, and responsible AI governance.

  • Must be able to collaborate in person with occasional impromptu meetings, working in a busy, crowded, and loud office environment with frequent distractions and interruptions.


Location Requirement:
This role is located in Tempe, Arizona. This position is required to be in office 4 days per week (Mon-Thurs); Fridays are optional remote work days.
Key Result Areas (KRAs):

  • Technical Vision & Strategy: Lead the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap development for the Dutch Bros Engineering organization, with dotted-line responsibility for DevOps functions.

  • Function Development: Develop and build the App Engineering functions, teams, and processes to better support partner teams.

  • Execution & Quality: Oversee Application Development, Custom Development Technology Products, QA, and Integration execution to ensure continuous improvement of solutions supporting Dutch Bros customers and employees. Ensure technical solution designs are in accordance with Dutch Bros and industry best practices.

  • Operational Telemetry: Lead Engineering teams in designing, implementing, and establishing monitoring capabilities for application operations, key performance metrics, and operational efficiency across development teams and vendor-hosted solutions. Lead efforts to build monitoring and proactive alerts to draw focus to any performance incidents or temporary degradation.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with the Product Management team and Project Managers to plan for and prioritize the build-out of custom development solutions for Dutch Bros. Work closely with IT Architecture, Platform Development, InfoSec, and IT Operations teams to build the infrastructure and tooling necessary to enable App Dev teams and support successful delivery.

  • Cybersecurity & Governance: Partner closely with the InfoSec team to ensure best practices in cybersecurity, compliance, privacy, and data governance.

  • Vendor & SaaS Governance: Partner with SaaS providers and external vendors to develop, operate, monitor, and maintain an application ecosystem that supports the needs of Dutch Bros. Drive vendors supporting business functions to align with Dutch Bros technical guiding principles, standards, and best practices, conducting regular QBRs and audits as needed.

  • Financial & Resource Management: Accountable for the spend and quality of work delivered by contingent development resources, effectively augmenting full-time employee team members.

  • Process Improvement: Identify gaps or deficiencies in existing custom development solutions or processes and advocate for the necessary changes to address them. Build transparency into stakeholder partnerships by involving teams in decision-making and ensuring solutions are delivered with few or no surprises.

  • In-Office Environment:Must be able to work in a busy, crowded, and loud office with frequent distractions and interruptions

  • Vision Requirements:Vision must be adequate or correctable to perform essential job duties, such as reading documents on a computer screen and using other visual tools. Use of corrective lenses or other measures to meet visual requirements is expected if needed.
