Controls Engineer
Controls Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to design, program, implement, and support control systems for industrial machinery and automated production equipment. The role drives control system architecture, PLC/HMI development, electrical panel design and BOM management, and on-site commissioning and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate combines hands-on machine-level experience (motors, pneumatics, fluid systems, vacuum pumps) with strong knowledge of major PLC platforms, industrial networks, CAD/AutoCAD, and compliance standards (UL, NFPA).
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop control system architecture for new and retrofit machinery, including PLC, HMI, drives, safety circuits, I/O and network components.
- Write, test and document PLC and HMI programs on platforms such as AllenBradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron and GE.
- Create and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD (or equivalent CAD tools); prepare accurate BOMs for procurement and build.
- Integrate industrial networks and communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, Modbus, Profinet, etc.) and configure networked devices.
- Specify and select motors, drives, encoders, sensors, solenoid valves, pneumatic components, fluid handling devices and vacuum pumps to meet application requirements.
- Lead factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning and startup support, including onsite troubleshooting and debugging.
- Ensure designs meet applicable safety and regulatory standards (NFPA, UL, CE) and collaborate with safety engineers to implement safety circuits and interlocks.
- Generate and maintain technical documentation, control narratives, PLC comments, wiring lists, and software revision control.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical and manufacturing teams to optimize designs for manufacturability, cost and serviceability.
- Populate ERP systems with BOMs, parts, and documentation; work with procurement and production to resolve build and supply issues.
- Apply continuous improvement methodologies (Kaizen, root cause analysis) to reduce downtime, improve performance and lower costs.
- Provide technical support to service teams and customers, including remote diagnostics, training, and field upgrades.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering or related technical field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years with automated process equipment.
- Proficient programming experience with PLCs and HMIs, including AllenBradley (RSLogix/Studio 5000), Siemens (TIA Portal), Mitsubishi, Omron and GE platforms.
- Strong debugging and commissioning skills, with proven experience resolving electrical, control and communication issues in the field.
- Experienced with CAD/AutoCAD for electrical schematics and panel layouts and competent in preparing detailed BOMs.
- Working knowledge of motors, motor drives, encoders, pneumatics, fluid systems and vacuum pumps used in manufacturing equipment.
- Familiar with industrial communications and networks (Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, Modbus, Profinet, IP networking).
- Understanding of electrical and machine safety standards (NFPA 79, UL, CE) and experience implementing compliant safety circuits and interlocks.
- Experience using ERP systems to manage BOMs, part data and production documentation.
- Selfstarter with attention to detail, ability to manage multiple projects and apply continuous improvement (Kaizen) practices.
