Job description

Fleet Safety Lead

We are seeking a knowledgeable and proactive Fleet Safety Lead to lead and continuously improve vehicle safety across our nationwide operations. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining a best-in-class fleet safety program for approximately 1,500 company vehicles, primarily medium-duty vans and pickup trucks. The successful candidate will possess extensive experience delivering driver training, coaching field employees, analyzing fleet performance data, and partnering with operational leadership to reduce vehicle collisions and strengthen a culture of safe driving.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and execution of the company's fleet safety strategy
  • Champion a culture where safe vehicle operation is recognized as a professional responsibility and an essential condition of employment
  • Develop standardized fleet safety policies, procedures, and safe driving expectations
  • Establish consistent driver qualification, onboarding, and refresher training programs
  • Evaluate fleet risks and implement corrective actions to reduce vehicle incidents
  • Evaluate leading indicator data including vehicle telematics and implement preventative actions to mitigate risk in advance of an accident
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives using fleet performance data and collision trends
  • Lead or participate in investigations for all fleet accidents and implement effective corrective actions where applicable
  • Deliver classroom and hands-on driver training throughout the United States
  • Conduct in-vehicle evaluations, participate in ride-alongs, and perform field observations to reinforce safe driving behaviors for Technicians, and train select personnel at various Branches to do the same
  • Provide coaching on defensive driving, parking lot safety, backing operations, lane changes, speed management, following distance, hazard recognition, distracted driving prevention, adverse weather driving, fatigue awareness, and vehicle operation regulatory requirements
  • Develop consistent driver coaching and accountability processes following preventable vehicle incidents, including individualized improvement plans
  • Develop and implement engaging training programs using real-world collision case studies, industry best practices, driver performance metrics, incident trends, and adult learning principles for initial and ongoing training activities
  • Develop and deliver ongoing fleet safety communications including Safety Alerts, driving safety campaign materials, Safety Minutes, and other similar driver awareness initiatives
  • Develop, monitor, and communicate key performance indicators and leading metrics that measure the effectiveness of the fleet safety program
  • Support compliance with applicable FMCSA regulations, driver qualification requirements, CDL programs, and vehicle safety initiatives as applicable
Qualifications
  • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible fleet safety experience
  • Experience supporting multiple geographically dispersed locations
  • Experience delivering classroom and behind-the-wheel driver training
  • Experience in developing safety procedures and training materials
  • Experience managing fleet safety programs for 1500+ vehicles preferred
  • Strong knowledge of defensive driving principles
  • Experience conducting collision investigations
  • Experience analyzing fleet safety metrics and telematics data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  • Valid driver's license with exceptional driving record
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Combination of office and field environments
  • Ability to operate company vehicles for training purposes
  • Ability to sit or drive for extended periods
  • Ability to enter and exit work vans and pickup trucks repeatedly
  • 20%-60% travel to Branches, customers sites, or project sites as required
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions during field observations
