Job Description Summary:

The Director, Accounting Operations is a subject matter expert who is responsible for oversight of all financial reporting tasks, which includes ensuring all transactions are recorded and reported in accordance with United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (U.S. GAAP), and for leading the Accounting and Registration & Revenue teams. This role is accountable for both business-as-usual accounting oversight and for supporting transformation in CFA Institute's processes and new business streams, including technology and process enhancements related to NetSuite and other systems that support the organization's accounting infrastructure.

The Director, Accounting may be headquartered in New York, NY, Washington, DC, or Charlottesville, VA and is eligible for remote work only in approved Eastern time zone jurisdictions within the United States. This role reports to Senior Head, Global Financial Reporting and Tax.

Job Description:

As a Director, Accounting Operations, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide leadership, vision and direction to the Accounting and Registration & Revenue teams responsible for preparing accurate and timely journal entries and reports, ensuring appropriate accounting control procedures, and managing CFA Institute's annual external audit and interim internal audits.

  • Partner with the Transformation team on strategic initiatives to develop effective management reporting tools with a focus on quality, accuracy, efficiency, and transparency.

  • Publish detailed analysis and meaningful commentary on data accuracy, the monthly close process, and results. Significant focus on improving MI output.

  • Act as an effective business partner to internal stakeholders in complex, revenue sensitive topics related to the support of new business initiatives and through efficient and scalable operational finance and accounting processes with respect to cash collection, reporting and analysis.

  • Identify and document revenue data requirements, critically evaluate reporting and analytical processes used for analysis, reporting, and dashboards to help with driving finance transformation and futureproof processes by creating visibility, clarity, and alignment for reliable financial and management reporting.

  • Exercise primary ownership for the accounting and reporting of CFA Institute's revenue streams, including ownership of the overall control environment, preparing, and recording complex journal entries, and accounting reconciliation.

  • Oversee the daily operational activities of the end-to-end process for contract to billing to accounting close for our services contract & order-based revenue business.

  • Collaborate across the Finance function and with internal stakeholders to apply ASC 606 - Revenue from Contracts with Customers and to support monthly and annual close processes.

The skills and experience required for this role are:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required.

  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrable success providing guidance and leadership in general accounting, with strong experience in revenue accounting.

  • Experience with Accounting Standards Codification 606 - Revenue with Contracts with Customers

  • Highly collaborative mindset, with the ability to provide impactful guidance and support to senior leaders.

  • Experience with NetSuite required.

  • Flexibility in competently juggling competing priorities and changing expectations.

  • Must demonstrate outstanding judgment and mature business skills with the ability to establish a strong rapport with senior management.

  • Excellent consulting, problem solving, and analytical skills.

  • Considerable experience in accounting in a multinational environment preferred.

CFA Institute salary ranges will vary by geographical location. This role is being posted nationally/internationally and does not have to be performed in New York City. In compliance with the New York City salary disclosure law, the anticipated base salary for this role in New York City will range between $145,300 and $242,100. Salaries are determined based on candidate relevant experience and skills, as well as internal equity.
