Operations Internship – Lumber Yard

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and gain real-world experience in the building materials industry? At Builders FirstSource – the nation's largest supplier of structural building products and value-added components – you’ll get hands-on exposure to daily operations, logistics, and supply chain functions in a fast-paced lumber yard setting. This internship is designed for students looking to explore a career in operations, logistics, or supply chain management while learning from industry professionals in the field.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

As an Operations Intern, you’ll be an essential part of our yard and warehouse team. You’ll assist with inventory management, logistics coordination, order fulfillment, and safety procedures – all critical components that keep our operations running efficiently. You’ll gain a behind-the-scenes understanding of how materials move from supplier to customer, and how yard operations support the broader goals of the company.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

  • Duration: 12 weeks
  • Start Date (Target): May 17, 2027
  • Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week)
  • Location: Lumber Yard or Distribution Facility within New England area with primary job location being Newton, MA.
  • Work Environment: In-person, physical setting (warehouse/lumber yard)
  • At this time, we cannot provide sponsorship

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Support daily yard and warehouse operations, including receiving, staging, and dispatching building materials.
  • Assist with inventory tracking, cycle counts, and restocking materials to maintain accurate stock levels.
  • Shadow operations leaders to understand scheduling, staffing, and production planning activities.
  • Help fulfill customer orders, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in product delivery.
  • Learn and apply safety standards in material handling, forklift operations, and yard organization.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing waste.
  • Work alongside cross-functional teams (sales, transportation, manufacturing) to understand end-to-end operations.
  • Participate in team meetings and report on project findings or operational challenges.
  • Operate handheld scanners, data entry systems, and inventory tracking software (training provided).
  • Observe and assist with customer service interactions and order issue resolution.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Operations Management, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in warehouse operations, logistics, or the construction supply industry.
  • Willingness to work in an outdoor/warehouse environment with exposure to varying weather and physical tasks.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and eager to learn.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally and stand/walk for extended periods.
  • Preferred: Junior or Senior standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
