What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Program Manager, you need a strong background in project management, software development processes, and a relevant technical degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, Agile methodologies, and PMP or Scrum certifications is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure seamless project delivery, effective team collaboration, and alignment between technical teams and business goals.

How do Technical Program Managers typically collaborate with engineering and product teams to ensure project success?

Technical Program Managers (TPMs) play a central role in facilitating communication and alignment between engineering, product, and other cross-functional teams. They work closely with product managers to define project requirements and prioritize deliverables, while coordinating with engineering to develop realistic timelines and resolve technical challenges. TPMs often lead regular meetings, track progress, and proactively address risks to keep everyone on the same page. Building strong relationships and fostering a culture of open dialogue are essential for TPMs to ensure projects stay on track and meet business goals.

What is a Technical Program Manager?

A Technical Program Manager (TPM) is a professional responsible for overseeing and coordinating complex technical projects within an organization. They work closely with engineering, product, and other cross-functional teams to ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet business objectives. TPMs facilitate communication between technical teams and stakeholders, manage project timelines and risks, and help resolve technical challenges. Their role often requires both strong technical knowledge and excellent project management skills.

What is the difference between Technical Program Manager vs Software Engineer?

AspectTechnical Program ManagerSoftware Engineer
Primary RoleOversees project execution, coordinates teams, manages timelinesDesigns, develops, tests software applications
Required SkillsProject management, communication, technical understandingProgramming, software development, problem-solving
Work EnvironmentCross-functional teams, project-focusedDevelopment teams, coding environments
CertificationsPMP, Agile certifications often preferredNone mandatory, but certifications like Scrum or AWS helpful

While Technical Program Managers coordinate and oversee projects across teams, Software Engineers focus on building and coding software solutions. Both roles require technical understanding, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

Job Summary:
Aviatrix is pioneering the Cloud Native Security Fabric, governing workload communication across various cloud environments. They are seeking a Staff Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to design and develop a critical integration playground for scale testing and infrastructure experimentation, while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities:
• Own the design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of the Platform and Hybrid Scale Integration Playground — including infra provisioning, test tooling, and environment lifecycle management
• Build and scale hybrid scale test infrastructure to support large-scale simulation environments with thousands of simulated gateways
• Develop benchmark test suites for operations known to cause problems at scale, ensuring regressions are detected early in the release cycle
• Design and maintain Terraform-based infrastructure for scale and platform playground environments, ensuring reliability and reproducibility across releases
• Identify gaps in test coverage for scale and platform features and drive improvements through new tooling or enhanced test strategies
• Partner with cross-functional teams — including Networking, Platform, Security, and ERT — to understand domain requirements and translate them into playground infrastructure and test designs
• Mentor engineers on the team; serve as a technical resource and set standards for test design, infrastructure quality, and best practices
• Lead test design and planning for platform and hybrid scale features, managing timelines and driving execution to completion
• Participate in code reviews, on-call rotations, and interview processes
Qualifications:
Required:
• 6+ years of experience in software development or test engineering, with strong emphasis on infrastructure, scale testing, or platform engineering
• Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science or a related field
• Strong coding skills in Python and/or Golang
• Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure concepts, including networking, gateway architectures, VPCs, and CSP account structures (AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI)
• Hands-on experience designing and managing test environments at scale using cloud platforms and infrastructure-as-code
• Proficiency with Terraform for building and maintaining regression and scale test infrastructure
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, Docker, and Kubernetes
• Proven ability to work independently and drive projects from design through delivery with minimal supervision
• Proficient in leveraging AI-powered tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, LLM-based assistants) to improve test generation, infrastructure automation, and engineering productivity
Preferred:
• Experience building large-scale simulation or emulation environments (e.g., fake/simulated gateway fleets, network topology emulation)
• Familiarity with benchmark testing methodology — designing repeatable benchmarks, establishing baselines, and detecting regressions in processing time or memory usage
• Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, or Datadog for environment health and test result visualization
• Prior work on hybrid or multi-cloud infrastructure environments
• Experience mentoring junior engineers or providing technical leadership on infrastructure projects
Company:
Aviatrix® is a leading cloud network security company. Founded in 2014, the company is headquartered in Santa Clara, USA, with a team of 201-500 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
