Division: Business

Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer
Location: Expected to be on-site during convention dates, may include the day before and the day after for setup and teardown.

About Anthro SoCal

Anthro SoCal is a community-driven convention celebrating furry fandom through art, performance, gaming, and social connection. Our success depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteer team. Anthro SoCal was formally known as Anthro SoCal in 2026-2027.

Position Overview

The Con Store Staff member is the public face of the convention's official merchandise and registration perks. Operating at the heart of the convention's marketplace, this role is responsible for processing transactions, and distributing attendee swag packages. You will serve as a frontline ambassador, ensuring that the excitement of the vendor hall is matched by efficient, friendly customer service. If you are a high-energy individual who loves interacting with people and thrives in a bustling retail environment, this position is a perfect fit.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: None
  • As convention approaches: Attend online staff meetings and trainings when requested
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is required with flexible hours. Must plan to work the minimum volunteer hour requirement posted on the website
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence may be required to assist with setup and teardown activities the day before and the day after the event
Key Responsibilities

Your daily duties will focus on commerce, crowd flow, and customer satisfaction:

  • Sales Operations: You will operate point-of-sale (POS) systems, handle cash and digital transactions accurately, and keep merchandise displays fully stocked and organized
  • Swag Distribution: Verify attendee credentials and accurately distribute convention swag packages, tier perks, and pre-ordered items, ensuring everyone receives exactly what ASC promises
  • Vendor Hall Line Management: Assist in directing traffic and managing queues outside the Con Store and Vendor Hall. You will keep lines organized, prevent blocking of walkways, and communicate wait times to attendees
  • Attendee Engagement: Actively converse with customers, answer questions about merchandise sizing or availability, and provide general convention directions with a welcoming attitude
  • Continuous Learning: Participate in pre-convention training to learn the inventory, pricing, and POS software, and remain adaptable to procedural updates during the event
Qualifications Required
  • Communication & Engagement: A genuine willingness to talk to customers, answer repetitive questions patiently, and maintain a positive attitude
  • Coachable & Willing to Learn: A strong desire to learn new sales systems, inventory layouts, and store policies quickly
  • Basic Math & Tech Literacy: Comfort handling money, calculating change, and operating digital POS software
  • Physical Endurance: Ability to stand for short burst of time and comfortably work in a loud, high-energy environment
Preferred
  • Retail Sales Experience: Previous experience working in a retail storefront, handling cash registers, or managing inventory
  • Convention Familiarity: Prior experience attending or volunteering at conventions, with a solid understanding of fan culture and attendee expectations
  • Line/Crowd Management Experience: Background in managing queues, ushering, or event security to help keep high-traffic areas moving smoothly
What We Offer

While this is an unpaid volunteer position, we provide:

  • Free convention membership and staff perks
  • Staff hospitality (meals/snacks during your shifts at-con)
  • Exclusive staff events and social opportunities
  • Recognition in convention materials
  • Experience in event management and team leadership
  • A supportive, creative community environment
  • References and recommendation letters upon request

Anthro SoCal is committed to creating an inclusive environment. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, experiences, and skill levels. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
