Access & Operations:
Access & Operations is responsible for the opening, closing, and security of our three buildings on the main campus. We perform general maintenance and some custodial services. We coordinate with campus entities and outside contractors, manage space projects, and provide support for library events. In addition, we are responsible for stacks management, reserves, printing services, equipment circulation, and the circulation desks. We facilitate access to the educational and research resources needed by our users through our Interlibrary Loan and Scanning services and provide multimedia expertise, services, and content at the Multimedia Resources Center (MRC). We take pride in being the faces of the libraries for people who visit in person to use our spaces and services and strive to provide a welcoming and inclusive experience.
Your Role on the Team
Under general supervision of the Curator for the Southeast Asian Archive, translates into English from Vietnamese, or translates from English into Vietnamese content for the Viet Stories oral history collection at the UC Irvine Libraries. Provides quality and accuracy review of Vietnamese transcriptions and English translations created by a vendor. Writes abstracts, provides biographical summaries, incorporates diacritics and idiomatic translations, and contributes keywords for oral history interview descriptive records in Vietnamese and English. Reviews student work in Vietnamese, as needed. Supports community outreach activities in Orange County, California to promote the Viet Stories collection and its use. This is a limited position working 40% time, or approximately 16 hours per week.
What It Takes to be Successful
Required:

• Native language of Vietnamese and subject-matter knowledge sufficient to translate materials for the layperson. Native knowledge means that the expression of thought is structurally, grammatically, and idiomatically correct, and uses the range of vocabulary common to persons who have received their educations through the high school level in a country of the language.
• Ability to listen and read oral histories in Vietnamese and/or non-native English with Vietnamese vocabulary interspersed, and prepare idiomatic translations, summaries, and abstracts from Vietnamese to English.
• Capacity to learn through on-the-job reading and research, or existing subject-matter knowledge, of the Viet Stories collection at UC Irvine and the Vietnamese American diasporic experience.
• Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to support inclusiveness within UC Irvine Libraries and the campus.
• Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma, a comprehensive knowledge of English, and a native knowledge of Vietnamese; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Less than 1 yearNative language of Vietnamese and subject-matter knowledge sufficient to translate materials for the layperson. Native knowledge means that the expression of thought is structurally, grammatically, and idiomatically correct, and uses the range of vocabulary common to persons who have received their educations through the high school level in a country of the language.

Preferred:

• Experience attending public events conducted entirely in Vietnamese, and/or in a bilingual Vietnamese/English language setting.
• Experience with project management software such as Trello or Airtable and working in a team setting to achieve shared goals.
• Experience reviewing the work of others, including quality control.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $27.60- $28.72 (Hourly).
