How much do medical physics jobs pay per hour?
What is medical physics?
A Medical Physics job involves applying principles of physics to healthcare, primarily in radiation therapy, diagnostic imaging, and nuclear medicine. Medical physicists ensure the safe and effective use of radiation in medical treatments, optimize imaging techniques, and maintain equipment quality control. They work in hospitals, research institutions, and industry settings, collaborating with doctors and technicians to improve patient care.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in medical physics?
To thrive in Medical Physics, you need a solid background in physics or engineering, a graduate degree in medical physics, and relevant board certification such as from the ABR or CCPM. Familiarity with advanced imaging technologies, radiation therapy equipment, treatment planning systems, and specialized quality assurance software is essential. Strong analytical thinking, meticulous attention to detail, and effective communication skills are critical for collaborating with clinical staff and ensuring patient safety. These skills and qualifications are vital to accurately applying physical principles to medicine and safeguarding quality and safety in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
What are some common challenges faced by medical physicists in a clinical setting?
Medical physicists often encounter challenges such as ensuring precise calibration and maintenance of complex equipment, adapting to advancements in technology, and maintaining strict safety standards for radiation use. They regularly troubleshoot technical issues under time-sensitive conditions and must communicate complex information to physicians, technologists, and other team members. Working in a collaborative healthcare environment, medical physicists also balance administrative responsibilities with hands-on clinical duties. Navigating these challenges requires technical expertise, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Job description
Position Summary
This role will support the application of nuclear medical physics in the research and development of imaging and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals (RPT) in Oncology. The individual will work in a multidisciplinary environment and contribute from discovery through late-phase clinical research, with a strong emphasis on enabling preclinical and translational imaging and dosimetry capabilities that support clinical development.
The Advisor - Medical Physicist will provide hands-on technical expertise in SPECT image reconstruction (required), dosimetry analysis, scanner calibration, tool development, validation, QC workflows, and site qualification. This role will support the development of internal RLT analysis capabilities spanning discovery through clinical applications, enabling robust, scalable, and regulatory-aligned imaging and dosimetry workflows.
Responsibilities
- Lead development and validation of in-house RLT analysis tools, including image reconstruction, activity modeling, dosimetry calculation, and calibration methods in partnership with both the Discovery and Clinical teams
- Provide quantitative imaging and dosimetry to screen and rank candidate radioligands, informing candidate selection in partnership with the Discovery team
- Develop and implement imaging and dosimetry methodologies for preclinical RPT studies, including quantitative imaging and dose estimation in animal models, and translational dosimetry to estimate human dosimetry
- Own validation strategy and execution for internally developed tools, ensuring reproducibility and alignment with clinical and regulatory expectations
- Lead scanner qualification and performance characterization for preclinical and clinical PET and SPECT imaging systems in partnership with both the Discovery and Clinical teams
- Develop QC workflows and ensure consistent application across imaging reconstruction, dosimetry, and calibration outputs
- Perform internal dosimetry analyses across preclinical and clinical datasets and provide QC review of analysis outputs
- Identify and resolve technical bottlenecks in reconstruction, imaging, dosimetry, and QC workflows
- Support translation of preclinical imaging and dosimetry methods into early-phase clinical workflows
- Support development of SOPs, imaging manuals, dosimetry documentation, and regulatory deliverables
- Contribute to preparation of datasets, tables, figures, and analysis outputs supporting regulatory submissions
- Interface with IT and software engineering teams to implement, deploy, and maintain validated analysis platforms
- Support site qualification, troubleshooting, and routine data processing across studies
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, external vendors, CROs, and imaging partners
- Ensure adherence to GCP, SOPs, and quality standards
Basic Requirements
- Advanced degree (PhD) in Medical Physics, Nuclear Physics, Biomedical Engineering or related field
Preferred Requirements
- Required: Expertise in SPECT image reconstruction and quantitative SPECT imaging
- Preferred: Experience with PET reconstruction and quantitative PET imaging
- Experience in radiopharmaceutical/internal dosimetry (organ level and/or voxel-based methods)
- Experience developing or validating scientific software or quantitative imaging workflows
- Strong understanding of nuclear imaging modalities (SPECT, PET, CT, MR)
- Ability to perform technical QC and communicate results to multidisciplinary teams
