Ancient History Jobs (NOW HIRING)

The Foreign & Ancient Coin Numismatist will specialize in identifying, authenticating, evaluating, attributing, and cataloging world and ancient coins for upcoming auctions. This position requires broad numismatic knowledge, strong research skills, close attention to detail, and the ability to determine authenticity, condition, rarity, and current market value.

Candidates should have at least three years of hands-on experience collecting, buying, selling, trading, researching, or professionally evaluating foreign or ancient coins. Expertise in both areas is preferred, but candidates with advanced knowledge in either world or ancient coinage are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

• Identify and attribute foreign and ancient coins by country or civilization, issuing authority, ruler, denomination, date, mint, type, variety, and condition
• Research unfamiliar coins using specialized catalogs, numismatic databases, scholarly references, and auction archives
• Evaluate authenticity and recognize counterfeits, reproductions, tooling, smoothing, repairs, cleaning, artificial patination, and other alterations
• Grade and value coins using current market data, pricing resources, and comparable auction results
• Research legends, languages, alphabets, iconography, historical context, and minting periods when necessary
• Write detailed, accurate, and marketable descriptions for auction listings
• Evaluate individual coins, bulk accumulations, dealer inventories, and complete collections
• Review available provenance and identify potential ownership-history or compliance concerns
• Organize, photograph, and prepare items for cataloging and sale
• Assist senior numismatists with consignments, collection purchases, and auction curation
• Communicate effectively with customers and consignors regarding coin submissions
• Stay current on auction results, collector demand, pricing trends, new discoveries, and authenticity concerns
• Provide occasional assistance with live-stream auctions as needed

Qualifications:

• Minimum three years of experience collecting, trading, dealing, researching, or evaluating foreign or ancient coins
• Strong working knowledge of world coins, ancient coins, or both
• Ability to accurately research and attribute unfamiliar coins
• Strong understanding of grading, authenticity, rarity, surfaces, varieties, and market valuation
• Familiarity with foreign and ancient legends, dating systems, mint marks, denominations, and minting practices
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in written descriptions
• Strong research, organizational, and communication skills
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven auction environment
• Ability to work collaboratively and take direction from senior staff

Bonus Points For:

• Advanced expertise in one or more areas, such as Greek, Roman, Byzantine, medieval, British, European, Mexican, Latin American, Asian, Islamic, Judaean, Celtic, or Persian coinage
• Ability to read or interpret Latin, ancient Greek, non-Latin alphabets, foreign languages, or historical dating systems
• Experience identifying sophisticated counterfeits, altered surfaces, tooling, artificial patination, and deceptive reproductions
• Familiarity with references such as Krause, RIC, RPC, Sear, Crawford, BMC, SNG, and other specialized catalogs or die studies
• Experience using Numista, ACSearch, CoinArchives, RPC Online, and major international auction archives
• Experience submitting world coins to PCGS or NGC, or ancient coins to NGC Ancients
• Previous employment with an auction house, coin dealership, museum, grading service, or collectibles business
• Academic training in numismatics, classics, archaeology, ancient history, art history, or a related field
• Experience researching provenance and cultural-property compliance
• Numismatic certifications, professional memberships, or formal training
