How much do zoo security officer jobs pay per hour?
What are some typical challenges a zoo security officer may encounter on the job?
Zoo Security Officers often face unique challenges such as managing large crowds during peak visiting hours, ensuring restricted areas remain secure, and responding to incidents involving both people and animals. They need to be prepared to address medical emergencies, lost children, or even animal escapes, all of which require quick thinking and effective coordination with other zoo personnel. Additionally, officers work outdoors in varying weather conditions and sometimes on weekends or holidays. Collaborating with animal care staff, guest services, and local emergency responders is also a regular part of the job. The role requires adaptability and vigilance to maintain a safe, welcoming environment for everyone at the zoo.
What is a zoo security officer?
A Zoo Security Officer is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of a zoo’s visitors, staff, animals, and property. They monitor surveillance systems, patrol the grounds, respond to emergencies, and enforce rules to prevent incidents. Officers may also assist with crowd control, first aid, and coordinating with law enforcement if needed. Their role ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for guests while protecting the zoo’s animals and assets.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the zoo security officer position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Zoo Security Officer, you need a solid background in security procedures, surveillance, and emergency response, often supported by a high school diploma and relevant security certifications. Familiarity with security camera systems, two-way radios, and incident reporting software is typically required. Outstanding observational skills, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help set top candidates apart. These competencies are critical to ensure the safety of guests, staff, and animals, as well as to effectively handle emergencies within the unique environment of a zoo.

Acting as the primary point of contact during the shift, the 'Day Shift Supervisor' helps ensure smooth daily operations by supporting staff, assisting with incident response, and serving as a liaison with other departments when management is unavailable. The position plays a critical role in fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, and guest engagement across the zoo campus.

- Provide in-the-moment feedback and document basic performance observations; identify growth areas for shift staff.
- Assist with the resolution of guest/staff complaints involving security personnel.

- Respond to calls and incidents; implement emergency procedures and support coordination with public safety responders.
- Administer first aid and coordinate with EMS and related entities as required.
- Assist and engage Zoo guests and staff in a welcoming and professional manner.
- Complete incident investigations and generate clear, accurate reports.
- Assist with ID card and key distribution as directed.
- Support general campus safety efforts, including snow and ice removal.
Emergency Response
- Serve as on-site point of contact during emergencies in the absence of department leadership.
- May assume Incident Commander duties when needed; establish unified command with fire, law, or EMS responders.
- Actively participate in emergency response protocols, including Incident Command System roles.
Staff Training
- Provide shift-based instruction on policies, procedures, systems use, First Aid/CPR/AED, and de-escalation.
- Help develop the training and mentoring skills of Security Officer III team members.
- Lead on-the-job training for new Security Specialists (I) and Officers (II) as assigned.
- Track and report on trainee progress and contribute to the continuous improvement of training practices.

- Contribute to the refinement of departmental procedures, plans, and training content.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
- Guide, support, and coordinate the daily work of Security Specialists (Level I) and Security Officers (Levels II and III); provide on-the-job training, shift oversight, and peer leadership while supporting departmental standards and objectives.
- Acts as a good steward for DZCA resources. Ensures the accurate reporting of payroll records and conserves overtime budgets.
Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications:
- Completion of a high school degree or equivalent is required.
- Two or more years of experience required in civilian or military security, safety, loss prevention, or law enforcement, interacting effectively with emotional guests and employees to provide resolutions, or any equivalent combination of experience, lived experience, and/or special skills. Experience working in a high-volume, customer-focused venue or attraction, and/or working in a non-profit, is preferred. Previous supervisory experience is required.
- Preference for candidates to have experience with ICS/NIMS, emergency management, crisis response, de-escalation, or large-venue incident command.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required; experience with CCTV, electronic access control systems, incident documentation platforms, and visitor management systems is also required.
- Strong ability to coordinate and lead day-to-day shift operations, including assigning posts, managing shift coverage, and acting as the point of contact for daytime security needs.
- Skilled in decision-making and situational assessment in active environments; demonstrates sound judgment and calm under pressure during incidents and emergencies.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage with guests, staff, volunteers, contractors, and public safety officials in a professional and welcoming manner.
- Knowledge of standard security procedures, including patrols, access control, incident investigation, and emergency response protocols.
- Ability to give constructive feedback and support staff while fostering a culture of teamwork, professionalism, safety, and guest service during high-traffic daytime operations.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable working independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams; adaptable to changing priorities and operational needs.
- Capable of handling confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
- Preferred experience includes coaching or training others and working collaboratively with departments in direct or matrixed relationships.
- Requires the ability to embrace, support, and integrate Denver Zoo's philosophies to promote and demonstrate its commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and anti-racism.
- Demonstrated fluency in a language other than English is a plus.
