GENERAL PURPOSE

Responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, and construction of the landscape at Cosley Zoo and its surrounding properties.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Minimum high school graduate or equivalent, with two (2) years of experience in the landscaping industry. Knowledge and experience in the operation of most equipment required to implement a landscape construction project. Must have reliable transportation. Pesticide operator license desired but not required. Must have great problem solving, analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to multi-task and work calmly and effectively under pressure. Must be available for varied schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform maintenance and repairs to equipment at Cosley Zoo.
  2. Maintain trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals.
  3. Perform tree and shrub pruning and trimming and follow instructions to ensure properly performed.
  4. Install, maintain, and repair general landscape improvements throughout the zoo.
  5. Maintains effective two-way communication with immediate supervisor.
  6. Communicate professionally with coworkers and public.
  7. Wear personal protective equipment for job functions when needed.
  8. Assist with non-landscape projects as needed.
  9. Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner to the internal customer that will facilitate team building and exceptional customer service to the external customer.
  10. Follow the Wheaton Park District and Cosley Zoo policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  11. Proactively support the District Mission Vision and Values.
  12. Maintain good safety awareness and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC.

Must have and maintain: CPR/AED certified or obtain within ninety (90) days of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: frequently move about the facility on uneven ground; occasionally move items such as construction materials, cleaning products, etc. up to 50 lbs. for up to 25 yards and over 50 lbs. with assistance, and position oneโ€™s self to perform maintenance and repairs, work on ladders and elevated surfaces, move on uneven ground, and grasp tools with repetitive use of hands/fingers/arms with good eye/hand coordination.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: frequently work in all weather conditions including, rain, snow, extreme heat and cold, with fumes, gases, odors, dust, mold, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, grease, oil, mud, poisonous plants, animal hair/dander/feces, and biting/stinging bugs and insects; occasionally wet, slippery and uneven surfaces; and rarely at heights over 12 feet with noise over 85 dbls. and in confined spaces.

Monday - Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm, (40 hours per week)

SALARY

$16.50 - $17.50 per hour, IMRF position

Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum

$15.00 - $18.75 - $22.50
