Zoo Maintenance Worker Assistant

Milwaukee County Zoo

Hourly pay range: $17.50 - $20.00

Job Summary: The Zoo Maintenance Worker Assistant will assist with maintenance and repairs of the buildings, equipment, and grounds of the zoo. This position performs a wide range of entry level maintenance tasks to assist other Zoo Maintenance Workers. The Zoo Maintenance Worker Assistant will also help with skilled trades when needed.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of the Maintenance Manager or Maintenance Workers, repair and maintain zoo structures and equipment, and help build props inside animal exhibits.
  • Install weather stripping for doors and windows. Caulk windows and buildings to increase energy efficiency.
  • Perform basic painting of structures and equipment both indoors and outdoors.
  • Assist the Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Workers, and skilled trades as needed.
  • Assist the System Control Coordinator take meter readings. Perform basic data entry into Cityworks.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:ย 

  • Current resident of Wisconsin.
  • Possession of a Wisconsin Driverโ€™s License at the time of hire, able to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Able to lift/carry and push/pull up to 50lbs.
  • Willing to work irregular hours with overtime, weekends, or shift rotation.
  • Basic knowledge of Outlook, Learning Management Systems, and Spreadsheets.

Preferred Experience:

  • Mechanical background or previous experience.
  • Technical training in maintenance or trade from high school or a technical college.
  • Maintenance experience.

In accordance withย Section 11, Ruleย 3 of theย Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
