What are Zai?

Zai refers to a traditional farming technique used primarily in West Africa to improve soil fertility and increase crop yields. The method involves digging small holes or pits in the soil during the dry season and filling them with organic matter, such as manure or compost. When the rainy season starts, seeds are planted in these pits, which helps retain water and nutrients in otherwise poor or degraded soils. Zai has been shown to revive unproductive land and is especially useful in arid and semi-arid regions. It is widely recognized as a sustainable agricultural practice.
