About the Lindenhurst Youth Center Founded in 1974, the Lindenhurst Youth Center is the safe haven in our community where young people congregate, build meaningful relationships, and find a true sense of belonging. As a non-profit organization, we are committed to developing social skills, fostering a positive self-image, and creating inclusive environments where kids have access to programs and experiences they may not find elsewhere. Our Drop-In Lounge welcomes all youth ages 10–17 from the Village of Lindenhurst and surrounding areas, and our calendar of events reflects our dedication to enriching the lives of the young people we serve.


Position Summary

The Youth Worker serves as the foundational role of the center, ensuring that our daily operations run smoothly and our environment remains safe, clean, and welcoming. Working closely with leadership, this individual actively engages with youth, supports daily activities, and helps maintain a positive space. The ideal candidate is reliable, energetic, and looking to gain hands-on experience in youth development and non-profit operations.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Youth Supervision & Engagement: Maintain a constant presence in youth areas to ensure safety, positive behavior, and adherence to center rules while actively participating in activities with youth ages 10–17.
  • Program & Event Execution: Work with staff to plan, organize, and execute recreational activities, workshops, field trips, and special events.
  • Facility Maintenance & Cleanliness: Perform daily cleaning tasks (sweeping, mopping, trash removal, sanitizing), monitor and restock supplies, and assist with basic building upkeep to ensure the center looks clean and presentable.
  • Administrative Support: Assist in maintaining accurate attendance logs, youth intake forms, client records, and daily phone coverage.
  • Conflict Resolution: Support leadership in managing behavioral issues as they arise and handle challenges with discretion.
  • Community & Outreach: Foster connections within the community to support youth programs and assist with recruitment efforts.

Qualifications & Requirements


  • At least 1–2 years of experience working with children or youth in a structured setting, including volunteer experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Reliable, adaptable, resourceful team player with the ability to work independently.
  • Physically active and able to fully participate in youth center activities.
  • Valid New York State Driver's License required.
  • First aid certification preferred; ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Bilingual and bicultural skills are desirable but not required.
  • Must complete sexual harassment and mandated reporter trainings within 30 days of hire.
  • Must pass an extensive background check.

    • Education

    A High School Diploma or GED is required. Any degree or degree-in-progress in Social Work, Education, Recreation, Sociology, Counseling, or a closely related field is preferred.
