Position Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Executive Director, the Director of Membership is responsible for creating and managing a seamless and impactful YMCA experience. This begins with an individual’s first point of contact with the Y and extends to ongoing engagement and wellness support for current members. The role requires professionalism, confidence, and comprehensive knowledge of YMCA programming, with a consistent focus on implementing the Y’s Member Engagement Principles: welcome, connect, support, and invite during all member and guest interactions.

This position demands expertise in sales, customer service, process development, project management, data analysis, and wellness services. The Director will enhance the member experience by overseeing strategies related to marketing and communication, wellness programming, and facility cleanliness and maintenance, ensuring the YMCA continues to attract and retain members while fostering organizational growth.

The Membership Director must possess strong skills in fiscal management, business operations, sales, and data analytics to drive improvements in membership growth, retention, engagement, and satisfaction. They will collaborate with the YGSF Association support teams to manage branch-level marketing and communications, including promotions, internal and external messaging, and digital presence. Additionally, the Director will supervise Member Engagement, tennis and Y kids staff, overseeing recruitment, training, and ongoing professional development to ensure high performance and alignment with organizational goals. This role also involves active participation in association-wide interdisciplinary teams, including the Member Experience POD.

Job Responsibilities Staff Development & Supervision
  • Serve as the department head of membership and as the head of programs over tennis and Y kids respectively.
  • Coach and mentor membership, Y Kids and tennis staff, focusing on effective training and development practices.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive staff development and training program; observe staff performance and provide regular feedback. Conduct annual reviews for staff.
  • Attend and lead staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Complete job‑specific training for Membership, Y kids and/or tennis – including Group Exercise, at YMCA of Greater San Francisco.
Marketing & Communication
  • Deliver marketing and communication strategies for branch and association‑wide promotions.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Department and Senior Executive Director to ensure timely and accurate posting of information across various platforms, including visual displays, printed materials, website, social media, monthly newsletters, and member communications.
Membership Acquisition & Retention
  • Implement membership acquisition and retention strategies, ensuring alignment with wellness key performance indicators and targets through comprehensive data tracking and monitoring systems.
  • Track membership acquisition by monitoring traffic and conversions through the lead management system and develop a reporting system to motivate staff.
  • Lead promotional events, both branch-specific and association-wide.
  • Create and monitor the membership budget, anticipating revenue changes and developing strategies to meet acquisition and financial goals.
  • Create and monitor staff schedules and payroll to ensure adequate coverage for membership desk, wellness floor, and group exercise classes.
  • Work with leadership to exceed operational standards, including safety audits, financial goals, and staff satisfaction.
Program & Service Evaluation
  • Analyze data and surveys to assess the effectiveness of staff training, promotions, member engagement, wellness support, personal training, and group exercise offerings.
Safety & Compliance
  • Adhere to YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and operational management.
Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • 2+ years in a supervisory role with a focus on customer service, sales, and/or marketing.
  • Proven experience in developing and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, build community relationships, and engage in development initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with the MS Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Director-level YMCA leadership experience in Membership or Wellness.
  • Bi‑lingual in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or any other languages.
  • Experience with Salesforce.
  • YUSA Team Leader certification.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

The Membership Director works in a dynamic, interactive, and community-focused environment. The role involves regular collaboration with various teams, including Marketing, Senior Executive Director, and other Association support teams. The director will engage with staff, members, and community partners to ensure the successful implementation of membership and wellness strategies. Leadership responsibilities include overseeing staff, conducting meetings, training sessions, and promotional events, as well as ensuring effective communication across the organization.

This role requires regular movement throughout the facility to monitor membership and wellness areas. The director may stand, walk, or lift up to 30 pounds, especially during events or facility management tasks. They must also provide coverage during staffing shortages and engage frequently with members and staff, both in person and virtually.
